We're birthing in the hospital, and my son's going to spend some time with Nana and Boppa. But I want him there right afterward and for as long as he wants to be there. I really want him to sleep there with us because we co-sleep part of the night, and he nurses to sleep. I'm not sure how toddler-friendly L&D is at my hospital, I will have to ask.

I'm going to pack a personal bag for him (separate from his clothes) to take to my parents' for the birth and to the hospital. So far I'm thinking:
  • Handmade baby doll (that I'd better start working on) w/ clothes, diapers
  • His favorite snacks - raisins, Annie's Cheddar Bunnies, blackberry teabags & honey (yes, my son drinks more tea than I do)
  • A couple of brand-new Hot Wheels cars
  • A couple of old favorite Hot Wheels cars
  • Magna Doodle
  • Notebook and pens/crayons
  • A gift he picks out for the baby beforehand
  • "I'm the Big Brother" t-shirt.
Any other ideas?

PS he's "helpllu.ing" me write this and g wants me to add som'be smilies to my posht.

That sounds good to me- pretty much what I'm packing.
I'm also packing , in MY bag, a present for each of the boys from the baby.
My hospital here does not allow siblings to stay overnight, but they don't have to observe normal visiting hours, either. I still haven't figured out how we'll manage nighttimes, but I guess we'll muddle through somehow.

I like the baby doll idea. My parents gave me a baby doll when my little brother was born. We have an adorable picture of us standing in front of the hospital entrance. Mom is holding my baby brother and I am carrying my baby doll in a baby doll sized moses basket.

I don't know if this would be productive, but maybe include a picture of you and daddy giving him a huge hug. I don't know what all will be going through his little mind, but maybe something reasuring to know that he isn't being "replaced" and is very loved by you two.

what a great thread! i was just wondering what to have as activities for dd and ds at the hospital when the twins are born (i'm due in march, but very likely to have feb babies).

some really great ideas so far. we would probably include dvds for them to watch to help wind down (either on the tv there or on our laptop). they might be getting those kids digital cameras from a relative for christmas. if so we will include those in their bag.

my husband is actually going home to stay the night with our kids and i have someone else comming to stay with me and the babies. it will just work so much easier for us than trying to have the kids stay the night with someone else.
