hey mamas,

i am due next month with #2 but didn't begin using cloth on #1 until he was 5 months. i have a question about using cloth during the first few days. did you mamas use cloth? if so, does the mecomium stain? should i avoid using my favorite dipes during that time? also, i have heard about umbilical cord ink. ummm...i didn't think i was a COMPLETE moron but what's this about? also, i have purcahsed a few wios with the countoured dipes. i'm kinda skeptical about how these will function with breastmilk blow-outs. any feedback is appreciated.

thanks!

We weren't able to use cloth dipes with ds as newborn, but I read that the disposable liners work well to keep meconium from staining. And staining was my experience on clothes... those first couple of changes with papa were a bit on the messy side LOL. And just cause were on the subject - a bit of oil on babes behind really helps keep meconium from sticking to the babe and this really helped us out. No clue about the belly ink...

This babe has been in nothing but cloth from the moment he was born, meconium didn't do anything to a dipe a regular washing couldn't get out

Depending on how bad the ebf blowouts are.. a wio might work. If not keep in mind you can take the snap in dipe out and use it as a regular cover over something with good elastic

IME mec doesn't stain at all. You can cut some fleece liners though for those few days.

Umbilcal cord "ink" is actually triple dye which is an antiseptic... a strong one used to prevent staph and strep infection in the hospital. You can decline it if you like.

If you are using cloth wipes, get the 4x8 ones and lay them inside your nb diapers. Or even better, cut up some old t-shirts and use that inside as a liner. The WAHM that I bought my very first cloth diapers from told me that.
I wouldn't use WIO with a newborn. My nephew has the biggest BM blowouts I have ever seen...Honestly, I'm talking all the way up to his neck.
I would stick with prefold or fitteds with some sort of cloth liner.
