I think its interesting that some people always tell you things that they say started their labor. a friends mom keeps telling me to go driving on a bumpy road.
I know that sex is supposed to help and they say that walking might help too.

What else have you heard that helps spark labor?

~accupuncture with moxibustion,
~homeopathics,
~birthroot extract (but it'll make you really sick)
~castor oil (never doin' that again... I couldn't move for 5 hours after drinking it I was so nauseated)
~spicy meal (the kind that takes your breath away and leaves you sweating)
~herbal bowel cleansing formulas (the kind that make your intestines cramp up)
~Sex (but it has to be *rougher* than usual and last as long as possible so I'm a no go at this point, the semen just helps you dialate)
~dancing for like 2 or 3 hours straight (except that then you'll be so exhausted... )
~Sometimes getting adjusted in the side-lying position by your chiropractor will cause irritation to the uterus and your water could break (which is why third tri women shouldn't be adjusted that way)

Some of these I've tried, some I haven't... we're doing the moxibustion thing on Friday night after Willem is good and asleep and the birth pool is set up. It's supposed to start labor within 30 minutes if done correctly. I figure if it happens, it happens, and if not then the baby just isn't ready. I am 4 cm dialated and have had two weeks of prodromal (irregular, early, start and stop) labor. And my EDD is Sunday ... I said I'd never do anything like this...

So, what is it about the spicy food that's supposed to induce labor?

I always get this funny picture in my head of a pregnant woman walking up & down stairs, drinking herbal tea (or eating a spicy meal!), while stimulating her nipples & having sex. Hahaha. With my last pg, the nipple stim always did bring on lots of cx, but they never lead anywhere.

spicy food is supposed to irritate your colon which is now pressed up against your swollen uterus. If your colon gets irritated it potentially could irritate your uterus thus initiating contractions and the onset of labor.

Another thing I just read about is giving a blow job and swallowing. It's the ingestion of the prostaglandins that will increase the chance of starting labor.
... but that's on my *I'm not that desperate list*... I'm so nauseous these days I don't think I could handle it.

Some of these need to be evaluated on a "is the cure worse than the disease" basis!!!!

BTW the bumpy road thing totally does NOT work. My mom tried this with every one of her pregnancies and it never worked. And this was in the far reaches of Canada's north, where it was an unusual road that *wasn't* bumpy. So save your tailbone some agony, and just don't go there. Or, if you need to - a trampoline would probably have much the same effect and be WAY more fun.

Apparently, according to my French friend, in France they think vacuuming, cleaning house, and carrying heavy things up stairs will induce labor.

I'm sure there's some sort of cultural relationship regarding the half-truths of labor induction, regarding taboos and least-honored activities in each culture...

And, we could be on the Man Show. Do you think Jimmy Kimmel would think I'm hot as a pregnant chick bouncing on a trampoline in a cheerleader's outfit?

:LOL I dread to think what the Man Show would do with a 9-mos preggers woman trying to get her water to break on a trampoline. There are very good reasons I don't let DH watch that show. (Yes, I censor my husband's tv. It's for his own good, he's far too impressionable.)

So, if French women think that doing housework can induce labour, does that mean that they actively avoid it til they're full term? How do they get away with this? If it's a cultural norm, sign me up for living in France! I speak French (sort of)! I love cheese! I will happily live on croissants and espressos! I can even cook French cuisine! And I hate housework! (hey, maybe I'm French and I don't know it! )

LMAO about the man show comment.
This is a good thread. I am willing to try almost anything when I reach term. I plan on trying the castor oil and sex thing. Sex before the castor oil of course. Maybe even the blue/black coohosh. We'll see. No trampolines for me though.

I LOL'd at the man show comment too!!

My friend told me loooong loooong walks up BIG hills helped her mom and aunt go into labor.

I had a major "sex fest" the day before I went into labor with my first (my only NATURAL labor, not induced). My ex and I had sex twice, I indulged in "self love" about 3 times , then I washed the floors (on all fours hmmmm) and cleaned the bathtub (which hadn't been cleaned by ex the whole time I was pregnant : ).

I dunno whether I was nesting because I was going into labor or went into labor because I was nesting, but I woke up the next morning in labor.

I have also heard that self-induced orgasms are more effective at inducing labor than others because they are more intense. I dunno if there is any merit to that but I figured I'd throw it out there for our "freaky" mamas".

I'm ready to try the castor oil...not to go into labor, but just so I can poop!

Not really though, I don't want the cramps that would come with it, but I am battling monster constipation.

I'll be 36 weeks Monday...no need to attempt to "induce" yet, but I am really ready for this baby to come out. I wasn't this impatient the first time around. And it's a conflicted feeling b/c if I go before 37 weeks I'll have to go to the hospital and I don't want to do that (I told dh we might go unassisted if the midwife insists on not delivering if I go into labor before 37 weeks).
