Is she looking around or looking at you as if she's trying to communicate? She's a littlge past five months old? Often they get very curious. Also, if this is happening at the beginning of a feeding, sometimes the stop-start-stop-start method helps the milk let down faster.
No I am trying to relactate on my right side. I had orginlly stopped feeding her from that side because I had all kinds of issues and that was one of them. I remember she would do that before. Its not like a distraction thing. SHe would just eat take herself off and then go back, looking at my boob the whole time. I know she was getting milk because I could see it and if I would hand express it would come out. So I am stumped at what the problem is. I would really like to get back to feeding her from both sides.
Is it at the very beginning of the feeding?
Yes.
See if any of the things on Kellymom sound familliar...

Also, frequent pulling off the breast can be a symptom of thrush. You might want to look into that if it's a possibility.

DS would do that if my letdown was too intense for him (stronger on one side vs the other too). He would nurse until letdown, pull off letting it squirt/flow/dribble, catch his breath, nurse a bit more. He would pull off to catch his breath then dive back on. This was just his pattern for a while.

Baby cows do this too (I'm laughing with you, because I had an overactive letdown and used to do this as well)

Unless you have other symptoms, I would lean towards (a) baby is trying to make your milk let down when she's not on the breast to help her not gag or (b) baby has realized that this behavior makes the milk let down more quickly.

I have an overactive letdown, and my DS does this, too. Once my milk has let down, he will go back to sucking "normally."
My dd did this at around 5 months. I thought she was just curious, but later found out at the doctor's office her throat was really inflamed and most likely it was making it painful for her to swallow the milk. Kind of unusual I know, but just something to look into.
I have experienced all of what annettemarie and naturegirl7 mentioned, too, as well as thrush, with both of my girls. With dd1 we had thrush, which gave her pain, and I was tense so sometimes she would thrash into my breast to speed up the let down (baby cows do this, too). With dd2, now 2 months, but dd1 is still nursing, I have too much milk and an overactive letdown. Also, I think by five months your dc's suck-a-little, look-a-little (as the Sears' call it) is probably a nursing mannerism as well as a reaction to whatever's bothering her. Happy researching!
