First our basil seeds got eaten so we planted a basil plant. Then that got almost entirely eaten so yesterday we bougt a brand new plant. This morning I looked at it and already somethign has been at the top leaves and has cut holes into the middle of the leaves....aargh. We've tried the beer to ward off slugs but it hasn't stopped whatever's getting at the basil. I'm a gardening ignoramous, so I have no idea what to do now.

Try putting out damp rolled up newspapers around the plant in the evening. Check them in the morning and if there are earwigs in them, throw them out!

So muse, do you think it was earwigs? Did you try the newspaper? I know that earwigs ate our sunflowers last year. I came here to ask the same question. My basil has some serious holes. We have a lot of ants in our soil. DH thinks it's the ants. Off to keep looking for a solution. Maybe I'll try the newspaper.

hi there..well, i still don't know what it was and i never got around to trying the newspaper (great idea though, thanks! )..earwigs never occurred to me..but anyway I moved the pot for a 3rd time to a different spot where it's propped up on some bricks, harder for the little creatures to get into, and since then it seems to be very very happy indeed..now i just need to figure out what to do with so much basil :LOL

Good luck with yours, Jennifer.
