I got a list of things from my MW to have on hand for the birth...besides the HB kit I have to order which is totally seperate...anyway one of the items is snacks for labor/birth that even the midwives can snack on, what do you think you will buy have prepared for this, they suggest protien and fresh fruits and vegs but who knows when i'll go in to labor and thats not something i can just buy and sit in the corner of the fridge for later

what are you all going to do?

Great question! I just got back from the grocery store with the arnica, gripe water, tea tree oil, and Mother's Milk tea that I still needed for my list... I think I might write down what I want to have on hand for labor as far as snacks and then as soon as May hits just try to keep those things stocked. Worse case scenario is I send DH out in early labor to pick up some extra goodies...

I haven't really thought about snacks for the midwives. I do plan on throwing together a chicken tortilla soup in the crockpot in early labor so that they and my DH will have something to eat during my labor. Its mostly canned goods so it would be easy for even my DH to throw together.

I have been keeping the cupboards stocked with crackers, nuts, cereals for quick snacks. I always have fruits and veggies around though. I'm planning to cut up some carrots and celery and keep them in a container of water in the fridge. My midwives don' do dairy, but having cheese sticks or little yogurts would be good to have on hand.

I also got some paper plates and plastic cutlery and cups.

I definitely plan to send dh (or someone else, doula maybe) to the store in early labor. I want the fridge WELL STOCKED with simply orange juice with mango (i dont CARE if its $6/jug.. I'm in labor dammit i can have anything I want!) and if I buy it in advance I simply do not have the self discipline to not drink it all in 2 days. So, someone's going to have to go to the store anyway to get that. I figure while they're there they can pick up some fresh fruit, things to make sandwiches..umm.. I'll make a list I guess. Maybe something from costco that you just take home and toss in the oven. Hey wouldn't it be hilarious to have pizza delivered in active labor? I wonder if it'd freak out the delivery guy

I live just down the street from the grocery store so in early labor my mom of DH will be going to pick up some stuff to have around the house.
I think we'll probably get some rotisserie chickens and fresh bread. Heh

Mmm... Thinking about food is making me hungry.

I don't know why I'm even reading this thread since I'm not having a home birth, but I bought some of this a few weeks ago and am thinking it was a bad choice ... I will never want any other orange juice again!

I bought a big box of crackers, and need to get some soup. I have some stuff in the freezer that people can raid. I also am trying to be good about keeping cheese on hand. I was going to get some of the Thai Kitchen soups, since I really like those too, and maybe some tortillas. That way they can have quesadillas.
I always have a lot of fruit and veggies on hand. I figure even if someone has to heat something up, we're good.
I also don't really plan to have people here for very long. My first was only 5 hours, including the time it took to pick back up after getting to the hospital. By the time I call the mw, she gets here, and baby is born, there may not be much time to eat! But I figure I will appreciate snacks for myself once baby comes. I was ravenous with M.

My midwife hasn't asked me to have any supplies on hand. I think she actually brings everything! I'll double check with her though.

I love the idea of planning to have yummy healthy food on hand. I think I may make a list of stuff to stock up on or send dh out for once things get going. I'm getting all excited just thinking about the upcoming birth! And...aaack I still have so much to do!

You might want to have other juice options besides orange juice on hand for labor, often the citrus doesn't agree with laboring tummies. Postpartum, on the other hand, my experience was I drank a jug a day almost. That was before I tried not from concentrate, I have a hard time buying the inferior stuff now but I do it.

I will get graham crackers, peanut butter crackers, nuts, yogurt and frozen strawberries for smoothies, granola bars, honey, grape juice, and some lemon juice for labor lemonade.

whats the receipe for that soup? sounds good.

I am just going to go and get fruit and veggies in early labor, maybe make an asian slaw or somthing, cheese and crackers ect.... all things that are easy and can just be cut up.
If things drag on to the point where we need a real meal then take out it is!
