I am trying to get opinions about what inserts and/or doublers/soakers everyone likes best. Being a newbie to CDing, I bought quite a few different things to try....but I am really having an issue with ds soaking through his fitteds and right now the only thing that's working for us is a pocket dipe (Fuzzi Bunz and Bum Genius to be exact but mainly Fuzzi Bunz since the Bum Genius caused a rash the other morning) stuffed with a prefold and either a Joeybunz Hemparoo or a Hempy Stuffin (I think that's what they're called)....this makes the diaper extremely thick and bulky which is okay at home (since he's not walking or crawling yet) and at night but when we go out, it's kind of difficult having him "stuffed" so full....(Plus...if it's too full, it causes a gap at the waist and legs).....and I'm also worrying that maybe I should be using something more breathable than this on his bottom anyway the majority of the time (anyone know how breathable a pocket dipe is? I'm not really sure) Anyway...just wondering if I could get some ideas from everyone who's been doing this for a while.

The first things that come to mind for me are:

1. How often are you changing him? If the insert gets really soaked, no matter how water resistent the outer layer is, it's eventually going to wick through, especially around the leg casings and waistband area. If you think about how you'd change him in a pf/cover setup with a fleece liner, you should do the samed with a pocket, IMO.
2. If you're overstuffed, that can put stress on the seams and cause wicking (did for us, anyway)
3. Pockets don't work for everyone. Neither of my boys did well with them.

Stuffed that full and with that much material you described, they're not terribly breathable. Plus, the water resistant outer layer and PUL itself isn't very air-movement friendly. But the fleece should be keeping his skin dry, so that shouldn't be a very big deal. I

My favorite insert are hemp Wonder-Fulls. Full coverage where I need it without a lot of bulk.

I had a super heavy wetter in the beginning and fitteds and wool were a better option.

I like the hemp doublers from Green Mountain Diapers. I also use a mf towel cut in half under hemp if I need a little something extra. Inside my fbs, I use a mf towel during the day and add hemp at naptime. Overnight I add a Jamtots Hemp insert.

Hi again!

I use a combo of a microfiber insert and a Stuffin. When I use hemp alone, he pees too fast and it leaks. It is pretty bulky, though. I'm not the best expert on this either, because i only use pockets in the diaper bag.

I'm curious about your fitteds problem, though. What kind are you using? There's a big difference between, say, Kissaluvs (don't hold a lot) and one of the more absorbant kinds (Little Beetle, Swaddlebees, Happy Hempys, etc.). Fitteds and wool would be very breathable. So would prefolds and wool, for that matter.

Sorry...I wasn't able to get online until today but thanks for all the replies...right now, I only use a pocket dipe stuffed pretty full for nighttime and if we go out somewhere....we live really far out and if we go to the grocery store or something, it takes me about 2 hours in drive time alone back and forth...plus time to shop....and he sleeps at least 7 hours at night if not a little more....but during the day, I've been using pockets not stuffed very full or fitteds and covers....while at home, I change him probably every 1-2 hours or so...but lately, I've been going through maybe 3-4 dipes in a 2 hour period because our fitteds just aren't working well for him. I have a little bit of everything really....I thought I loved Kissaluvs because they fit my skinny boy good but realized they didn't hold much so I sent back 11 of those that I had ordered....I have a Little Beetle hemp lite, hemp original and One (the orginal worked great for us yesterday!) but the lite and the One leaked very quickly with just one pee, I have a Under the Nile which I heard was great for nighttime but he was soaked after using it the other night....very soaked! It would probably work for us during the day for a few hours without an issue (but it's super bulky) but overnight....it didn't work. I have a couple of Doodle Bottom fitteds and a Happy Hempy but none of those are working for us really. I am trying to find something that works good while still maintaining breathability...I like the pocket dipes for going out (although I have to put so much in them that they are very bulky which could be an issue once he starts moving around more) but I would prefer to use fitteds and covers most of the time....The Little Beetle Original worked great yesterday though so I think I'll try it a few more times and maybe stock up on those?

Again, thanks for all the replies! It helps to hear others opinions about this stuff!

What kind of covers are you using for the fitteds? I have both a Little Beetle original and the new ONE, and they seem to absorb the same for me. I've heard such good things about the other brands you've mentioned for heavy wetters, too. I'm just curious if it could be an issue with the covers. I had some Polar Bummis for a while and they wicked every time I put them on once he hit 3 months. I use the same diapers under heavy wool and he can go all night.

Just trying to troubleshoot for you.

I'll definitely try some of these doublers and inserts everyone is recommending.....a lot of this CDing is trial and error I suppose

Amanda----I usually use a wigglewormbottoms cover (very cute) or a Stacinator fleece....but I do have an Aristocrats wool soaker too...but I haven't taken it out of the package yet and washed it so I haven't tried it yet. I have 2 loveybums wool covers on their way in the mail though...well, they are actually AIO's (or as loveybums refers to them...LIO's)...they have a snap in dipe but I can use the covers with my other dipes too from my understanding. I honestly was trying to avoid wool mainly because the idea of washing it by hand with a seperate wash and lanolizing it isn't very appealing to me...but I have heard so many good things about wool that I am going to try it....especially because I like the breathability factor and I've been told that you don't have to wash the wool that often...maybe every 2 weeks or so unless you get a really bad mess on it before then. I have a Bummis SWW too and a couple of other covers but I try to stick with fleece right now if I can.

What I'm wondering is if maybe I should go up a size in my more fitted covers...maybe since I have bulky fitteds with doublers, I need a bigger cover? Tommy is right in that in between size of a lot of items...he's in the low 13 lb range but has a long rise...he's 26 inches long....so I've noticed that a lot of the smalls are getting tight but mediums are large on him except for the rise...but maybe if I stick with a size small in his fitteds and a medium in his covers, that would work better?

You need to break out that Aristocrat!
You'll love it. It's great for a heavy wetter. I've heard that the fleece doesn't work as well for heavy wetters, although I haven't tried it myself. Get that crat lanolized and washed and you'll be good to go. They take about a month to break in for some reason, but they work well even during that month (they just wick a bit more than they will once they're broken in). Make sure you use enough lanolin and you'll be in good shape. I've heard such nice things about the Loveybums, too, that I bet they'll work well for you. Wool may be a good answer for your fitteds problems.

Thanks Amanda! That's kind of what I've been thinking...I was avoiding wool when I first started this but now I think it might work best for me...we'll see. I will lanolize that Aristocrat tonight and start using it as soon as it's ready.
