I just called to set up my first prenatal for this pregnancy. The receptionist assumed that I had just taken a positive test, but when I told her no, I'm about 8 weeks right now, she was like "And you haven't called before now?" Um... No.
: Should I have? With DS I waited the same amount of time to go to the doctor because I was busy with the bar exam and couldn't make a doctors appointment until the test was over. This time I just did it out of habbit, I guess. Did I do something horribly wrong? They didn't even say anything about it with DS, so I'm a little shooken up that she decided to fuss at me this time, and that's why I'm so confused.

What a weird receptionist. I'm assuming it's an OB or midwife's office because you spoke with a receptionist. I thought they didn't see people til 8 weeks at the earliest and sometimes not even til 12 weeks for the first appointment. Maybe this attitude is a sign that you should find a different care provider. :LOL
What's the point in an early appointment if you have no special circumstances? All they are going to do is tell you you're pregnant, check your pee and blood pressure and weight and send you home.

See, that's what I thought, too! (Yes it's an OB.)

I don't know any OB that takes people sooner than that unless there is a medical reason for it. I'd say you just got a weird receptionist! Had you called before then, they probably would have told you to wait until you were 8-10 weeks along anyway!

I was 11 weeks at my first appt and I called teh day I was 17dpo

What can they do for you that early anyway...I know some people like to go early to get hcg #'s or ultrasound but if you aren't concerned there is really not reason to go.

*shrug* I didn't go to the OBGYN with my daughter until I was 5 months.
: I also will be going to the OBGYN for the first time this week (I am 18 weeks) although I would have gone earlier, it took me a month to get an OBGYN and prior to this I was in Florida taking care of a family member.

I've never been a huge fan of going to the Dr. unless I had to, and I wouldn't have an abortion, so why go earlier unless medically neccessary?

You're fine, hon.
I'm 7 or 8 weeks too, and I just called last week, and don't go in until next week. Maybe the receptionist wasn't scolding you, but just surprised that you weren't more anxious? I mean, I bet they do get a lot of calls from people who are still holding the stick, right?

So I wouldn't worry too much unless they hassle you when you go in, in which case yeah, you might want to look into another provider.

I agree with the previous posters. There really isn't any reason in a normal pregnancy to be seen even before 12 weeks is there? My mw didn't see me til 9 weeks, then once a month since. I know many mws don't even see clients before 12 weeks unless it's a special circumstance. Don't you worry. That receptionist is a dork.

Thanks everybody!
: I didn't think it was a big deal because I've never had a miscarriage or anything like that (thank God), so I didn't think it was a big deal. But my best friend's mom found out I haven't gone yet and had given me a suprised and disaproving look, and now the receptionist says that, and it all got me worried, that's all. Glad to know I'm not the crazy one.

For this pregnancy I called at 4 weeks and was told to come in for an information gathering session at 8 weeks with a nurse (when was your last period, etc etc). Then at 12 weeks I had my first appt with a midwife.

For my first pregnancy I called at around 4 weeks and went right in. Got a pap smear etc from the actual OBGYN. But this was a different practice I ended up running away from early on.

Most gals probably call as soon as they get their BFP, she might have just been surprised.

It took us so long to conceive (2 yrs) that the doc wanted to see us right away (at 6 wks) and we had an ultrasound right away at 7 wks. My next appointment is at 10 weeks.

From what I gather, very early prenatal appointments are becoming more & more common. There's not a need for them in a typical pregnancy, but one can argue the need for constant prenatal care in a typical pregnancy as well.
With my first pregnancy I called immediately to set up an appointment & was seen ASAP for an ultrasound to date the pregnancy, since I hadn't had a period in six months (and they all assumed I was just a particularly stupid person who was 6 months pregnant
), & it turned out I was 8.5 weeks. But after that I wasn't seen until the first trimester was over, and it was standard procedure for the clinic at the Navy hospital to not make any appointments--other than an initial info-gathering session with a nurse--in the first trimester.

Unless you have severe morning sickness or reason to suspect an ectopic pregnancy, there's not really a whole lot to do during the first trimester, and as far as I'm personally concerned, the less time spent with an OB annoying me, the better. (Thus I am going UP this time around.
