When does YOUR dc intend to stop nursing?

I asked Prenna on a whim today:
When do you want to stop nursing?
She looked at me from the boob, and grinned.
Will you ever stop nursing?
She shook her head, still nursing away...
You're almost 3... how about when you turn 3?
She shook her head again, and grinned... I didn't know for sure if she knew what I was talking about, on what level...
Four?
She stopped nursing, smacked her lips and said, "Five... when I'm five."
Really?? Five?
Having resumed her latch on the boob, the only one she nurses from, she smiled and nodded.
Five is big... you don't wanna stop nursing when you're 3?
I smiled and she smiled, and shook her head.
How about a compromise? How about four? Do you think you will stop nursing when you're four? Mom would be ok with four.
She came off the boob, and said "Okay Mom... four. I'll stop when I'm four."

We'll see how THIS plan goes!

That is really cute.

My oldest is 4.5 with an autism spectrum disorder. I don't think he has a plan at all. He doesn't nurse daily but I don't think he is thinking about stopping at all. If I asked he would just tell me sunday.

My almost 3 year old nurses way too much to think about stopping.
Maya's been telling me she'll be done nursing...

"never"
"when I'm Grace's age" (15)
"when I'm seven"
"I'll never, ever, ever stop nursing!"

I just asked her (she'll be 4 in July) to get a fresh response. She looked thoughtful, was quiet for a minute, and stated quite surely, "eight."

Then again, she doesn't really have a concept of time at this point. It's adorable watching her learn about time. ("It happened for 180 minutes/days/years/months!!!!!"

my daugther ususally says, "five....or maybe six."
and just this morning she unlatched for a minute (you know when they think of something and then start to smile and can't keep latched on even though they want to?) and put her hand on my cheek and said, "it's funny. even though i'm four, i'm still just a little nursling."
which is SO true and i wish i could explain it that well to all the mamas who unknowingly say "i can't imagine/wouldn't be comfortable nursing an X year old." i never know what to say when people say that. i mean i have my pat answers, but it's so hard to find the line between "yeah, it's unusual..." {even though she's ONLY four!} and "i think you kind of missed out in a way, my friend...".

maybe next time i'll just try "it's funny. even though she's four, she's still just a little nursling."

My daughter is nearly 3 years old, and she refused to answer the question.
:

After I had asked her, she just looked at me like I had asked the most stupid question in the world, and said: "But Mom, I will always NEED to nurse!"

Aww!
My DD is only 15 months old so can't articulate an answer to that but I am SURE it will be a long, long time!!

Today, she said...
Mama, may I have some num, please?

To which I responed, "Sure... are you hungry? If you're hungry, you might try finishing your breakfast, first..." She had abandoned her oatmeal...

No, Mama, I am hungry for the NUM. I LLLOOOOOVE it...!!

She squeezed me tight, and smiled.

While she nursed, I asked again, just to see... "When do YOU think you'll want to stop nursing?"

In a minute...
I haven't asked my 2.5-year-old, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't get it.

I don't think he knows that people ever *stop* nursing, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't think he'll ever stop.

And I don't have the heart to break it to him right now.
So sweet! I so wish I was still nursing my toddler..... at least I can nurse my daughter until she wants to stop

PrennaMama,
This reminds me of an expression I read on these boards once about the difference between being "tummy hungry" and "heart hungry".

Aileen,
What's interesting is that she sounds so mature because she's obviously very verbal. And yet the need to nurse is just as obviously real and compelling.

I needed to hear this since DD1 will be three at the end of August and I have been hoping she'll start winding down. But this helps put things in perspective because it sounds like something my DD1 might say.
Thanks, ~Cath

I've asked my dd this and I don't really thinks she understands the question. so, I ask her are you going to "nur" when you're a big kid...yes...are you going to nur when you're uncle B's age (12)...yes...are you going to nur when you're a grown-up...yes...do grown-up's nur...(then we both laugh).

This is so cute.

DD1 used to always say that she would wean when she was 5y, she made it to 4, until she decided nursing was just for babies.

When my oldest was still a nursling, he told me he planned to nurse until he got married - then he would nurse from his wife

He stopped at 4. Three years later, at the grand old age of 7, he is still a bachelor.

DD is only 5 months right now (and I wish she would stay this age for at least two more years) but I had to take a peak at this thread. CLW is so new to me because nobody in my family ever BF. If hearing DD say something like this is my only reason for CLW, I'm game! How precious can they get!?
My middle daughter Mesa weaned around 5. She is 6 1/2 now. When we used to ask her she would say that she would stop when she died.

Levi is almost 3 and doesn't answer when I ask. He just asks for more mikies.
I asked my soon to be 3 yr old ds he turns 3 in august when he would stop nursing he thought very throughly he said hmm 20, then he goes no it will be 7 then he goes no it will be when I'm three .

It has become an ongoing discussion in our house... Dh asked her the other day "How old are you?" "Two and a haff... " she replied confidently. "And how old will you be when you stop nursing?"

"NEVER-OLD!" She yelled grinning and asked for "some num, please, Mom?"

thought y'all might like to know that tonight right before she fell asleep, Maya said, "sip mama?" and giggled (she calls me Mommy, usually) and said she was being just like the child I read to her about from the computer... (this thread)

:)

When my son was 3, he said he'd wean when he turned 4. Well, that came and went a while back! Now he alternates between saying he'll nurse until he's 5, and saying he'll never wean.
My 18 mo. old probably has no idea anyone ever weans.
