At what age is yogurt (full fat, of course) okay for a baby? Mine is 8 months old.

Thanks!

DD is almost 8 months and I have been giving her yogurt for a couple weeks now, about once (which means a couple spoonfuls at the most) every two - four days.

I looked into it before I started to determine it was okay, since I knew no cow's milk until she was older. But I don't remember the exact reasoning or age in the research I did
Just that it was okay for me to offer it.

I started yogurt at 8 months, but she had back-to-back rounds of antibiotics and I thought the benefit of the yeast outweighed the risk of dairy.

The ped told me that most babies can handle cow's milk by about 9 months, but they recommend waiting until a year to be on the safe side.

I started offering it to DS around 8 months...maybe a little before. My understanding is that yogurt and cheese, because of how they are made, do not really count as cow's milk products. (I think I read this in the baby-led weaning book) So, you don't have to be as cautious about them. That said, of course you'd always look for a negative reaction.

I read in baby super foods you can give yogurt after 8 or 9 months (i think). I am not to that point with my LO, but I know it is not at beginning of introducing foods.

I gave my Lo yogurt at about 7 mo. bc she was on antibiotics and the doc said it was ok. If we had had a family history of dairy allergies, I would have been more cautious and waited.

My DD loves smoothies (hence my name) we make on everyday (to share) yogurt, honey, fruit oranges, pineaple, strawberries or whatever fruit we have in the house and a little bit of skim milk

She doesn't really like yogurt on it's own though.

The most recent recommendation I could find was 9 months. I would wait until 12 months if there were problems with milk allergy or asthma in the family. Of course with a breastfed baby you never have to give your child milk products.

9 months for yogurt and cheese. Because they are cultured, the proteins don't pass through the lining of the digestive tract the way liquid milk proteins do. Of course, if the baby reacts to dairy, avoid all dairy products until they are tolerated-usually by age 3.

My ped said it was OK at my DS 7mo well visit. So I got him the yo baby plain & it is still his favorite food at 8.5mo.

I tried with DS the other day (he's 7.5 months) but he spit it right back up! Only reason I tried in the first place was that I was told probiotics could play a part in helping his eczema, but it was a no-go. I'm actually cutting out dairy for a bit to see if that helps, but if it's not a dairy allergy then he may get it closer to a year.

If you really want to do yogurt, but are worried about the milk issue, check out the thread in Traditional Foods about making breastmilk yogurt at home.
I thought it sounded like an interesting idea and posted about it and apparently it can and has been done!

Lina and I share a yogurt a day, low-fat*. Since she eats slightly less than a tablespoon's worth I don't see any reason to withhold it from her. I'll worry about getting her full fat yogurt when she starts eating more complementary foods in general.

*I eat a spoonful then put a bit on the tip and give her the spoon then take it back for my turn. When we're done she gets the spoon to chew on.
