Obviously by the day of birth but I just realized I'm about to turn 7 months and I haven't even really looked at car seats. Have darn near everything else but since its a more $$$ purchase I've been putting it off. I've decided to just go with a bucket for now but don't even know where to start. I think I picked dd's seat because it was cute! All I know is this time around is I want a 5 pt harness. When do you plan on getting yours by?

Well, I just ordered mine last week, and I'm 35 weeks. : Last time I had it installed by now, LOL! It should be here in a week or so, then I need to go have the installation checked by a car seat tech (which I highly recommend!!). And right on with the 5-point harness--it's the safest!!!

I chose the Graco SafeSeat, in the G Collection pattern. It's a new bucket seat that goes to 30 pounds & 32 inches--higher than any other bucket out there, so it will (hopefully) last a little longer. I don't plan on using the carrier feature much (love my slings!), and probably not at all after the babe hits 13-15 pounds or so, but it's nice to have as an option for a sleeping babe! You can find one style of the SafeSeat at Target and one at BRU for $130, and BRU has another style with a boot for $140, I think.

Good luck choosing--it's the hardest part!

We are completely goofy over-the-top excited first time parents. We bought our car seat at 18 weeks

I wanted to make sure it would fit in the car

Don't be like me and have it arrive while you're in labor

I'm weird...I bought mine at like...12 weeks in? Not sure exactly but it was really early. Of course DH wanted to get the stroller so he'd have something to put together (read: play with). And yes I also have a sling.

Just a thought for the early buyers... Car seats expire six years from the date of manufacture, so the longer you wait, the more time you have before it expires--for future kiddos anyway. (Also, just because you bought it in a certain month/year doesn't mean it was manufactured then. You can ask about the DOM if you are ordering online, or check it yourself in a store.)

I just got mine about one month ago. I installed it in the car on monday. I wanted to secure it so I did not have to when I go into labor! hehe.

I plan to go to the store and try the store models in my car in the next few weeks. It won't get any easier doing that as my belly grows so I want to get it done and over with. I don't plan to actually buy the seat, though, until I the third trimester. I don't want to have it in my way any more than necessary. With ds, I think I installed it when I hit 37 weeks.

I did a lot of research here. I am going with the Graco SafeSeat too!

I have a 2 door Honda Civic (everyone pity me please!!) and I'm under some delusion that I can keep this babe in the bucket until the 30 lbs. mark (even though my friends claim it won't work cuz the baby will want to sit up and look around).

After the SafeSeat, we are getting a Britax Boulevard. That sucker is HUGE, so I'm hoping I can go from bucket to front facing.....Its a dream, I know. But at the very least, we will be rear facing for less time.....I hope!!

I researched car seats extensively, and I'd be happy to help you if you wanna PM me. Obviously you know what i chose, but I can explain more about them and why, if you want

I typically have had them by 35 weeks though I didn't necessarily have them installed until about 37 weeks. We are going with a snugride this time again because the new graco saferide is too large to fit in the seat it needs to go in, and still allow my tall dh to drive comfortably. We had to go with the Evenflo Triumph convertable when we switched ds3 because it was the only carseat short enough rear facing to allow my dh to drive. Because of the other kids and the way school pickup and dropoff are, the baby has to be behind the drivers seat to allow the other kids to get safely out of the car.

If only carseats were a simple thing. Sigh.

I started researching car seats pretty early in the pregnancy and ordered one just a couple weeks ago. Our Britax Marathon arrived two weeks ago. We plan to try it out in the car this weekend (but not leave it in until much closer to due date)

Two-door car here, too. :/ We haven't bought a carseat yet...or anything else...I guess we'll get around to that sometime in the next couple of months. I am not looking forward to dealing with the carseat and the two-door car, though.

yes, but the longer you can keep your babe rearfacing, the better. it's so much safer. I wouldn't turn a child sooner than absolutely necessary. my 34 month old still has quite a bit of growing room RF in his marathon.

Well, my brother drove my Camaro for quite a while with my niece's bucket seat in there...and he's about 6' tall. She was always behind him though because if she was behind my brother's girlfriend then she couldn't reach her while he drove.

Bit of advice...try not to go taking the carseat out too much or you'll probably strain something lol. Sorry I know that doesn't help, but hopefully you'll find a way to make the small car + carseat thing work.
