and they've never actively TTC

I personally would not believe them!

I've just heard too many stories.

ETA: I think it's been made clear but what I was thinking (after reading the "friend got pregnant on purpose" thread was that if your sex partner tells you this you should STILL use birth control because you never know.

Are you thinking of a hypothetical situation in which a future girlfriend assures you she can't get pregnant? Don't worry; if you're also a girl, you're all set anyway :

He was convinced I wasn't his bio child until I was born

I'm his only bio child btw, so I think I may be ther result of a freak stray sperm.

My sil tried for 6 years with her dh, now xdh, and couldn't get pregnant. They said it was her, can't remember exactly what she was told was wrong. Then at 38, surprise!

I was thinking the same thing!

But yeah. I know a girl who got pregnant because the guy said he was infertile. I think he thought he was actually. Obviously not.

My grandma was in a bad car accident when she was 13--she somehow lost an ovary and got her nose sliced off (it was reattached). She was always told that she would never be able to have kids but her and my grandpa actively tried for something like 12-15 years. They were ready to start the adoption process when she got pregnant with my father--the was in her mid 30s. The really freaky part is she got pregnant AGAIN when he was a few months old but she miscarried so Dad's an only child.

They might mean that it would be inadvisable for them to try. Lots of reasons for that:

Genetic incompability--both positive for tay-sachs gene, for example
Chemical exposure--some chemiclas are mutagenic and could make having a biological child dangerous after an exposure. Think Agent Orange.
Medical condition--difficult to control diabetes or thyroid condition can both make having children inadvisable, as can some mental illnesses. Many/most of these can be overcome with effort, but there may always be an extra element of rick that some couples may not be willing to take.

This reminds me of someone I used to work with who had VERY bad asthma. She was constantly on some form of medication or another. One day, her doctor remarked, "You can't get pregnant on prednisone," meaning, of course, DON'T, right?

Except, she took it literally and decided she could sleep with her boyfriend of like 2 weeks sans birth control..because, you know, she couldn't get pregnant :

Her little dd is very cute

Just wanted to add, if it was super important not to get pregnant, I"d use bc even if I/the person involved had been ttc. Short of the guy having a vasectomy, or something. Same if I was the one told that.

I post on another board with a woman who never used birth control and in I think about 20 years, she had 2 kids. She & her hubby had been together for like 12, and then ...surprise!!!

And i know someone who had a son, tried for YEARS to ge pregnant and then had a surprise baby when her son was 22.

Yeah. I used to, ahem, know a guy who'd been told was infertile due to some sort of inutero exposure to chemotherapy, I think?

He was never real clear on the specifics, and I never inquired too closely. But it did seem to make him think he was exempt from needing to use birth control. He was shocked when I told him I was pregnant, claiming that it couldn't have been him.

People are so odd sometimes.

And I've known two people whose fathers had vasectomies *before* they were conceived. In one case, her mother was also on birth control pills to help regulate her cycles at the same time. Mind you, looking back as an adult, I have to wonder how accurate the story was, probably her mother was on progesterone-only pills or some such and lower dose ones. Probably just helped her luteal phase be long enough to support the "one that got away".

My best friend in high school got pregnant by my cousin, who had apparently told her they didn't need to use BC because he "couldn't have kids." (FWIW, he now has three.) I didn't know about that little line beforehand or I would have warned her, but I did laugh at her when she said it.

I'm sitting here right now looking at another cousin's youngest son, whose father's mother was told that he couldn't have children. By a doctor, actually, after surgery to repair a hernia that supposedly had ruined his vas deferens. They were neither TTC or TTA, so Jon Jr is sort of a happy accident.
