I know this question has been asked before but I'm having absolutely no luck finding it. I'm just barely pg with #2 but am wondering when we should call the midwife to start services. This will be our first midwife experience, with our son I had my first OB visit with the nurse practitioner at 8 weeks and didn't see the OB until 10 weeks

I saw my midwife when I was 5 or 6 weeks pregnant for an interview, and then when I decided to go with her I saw her at 8 weeks for a prenatal. She'd probably be one of the first to hear I was pregnant if I got pregnant again - maybe after dh and my parents lol.

First trimester would probably be a good time to start finding out what your options are, interviewing mws, stuff like that. If you need guidance/advice/support, then you can request an appointment as soon as you want to--I tell women that if they need me sooner, to call, but if all is well then we should start visits btwn 12-15wks.<br><br>

the sooner the better if you need to interview and check out different midwives. my mw takes 5-6 clients per due date month and once she's booked, she's booked!<br><br>
i called at 5 weeks, had an interview and started my appointments at 7 weeks.

Eh, there's only 1 midwife in this area, so that cuts down on the interviewing! I can't imagine that she'd in any way be worse than an OB but interviewing her first wouldn't hurt. Squee, I'm so excited!

I think 8 weeks is the earliest for an acutal prenatal. I think most midwives have a flat global fee so it probably wouldn't cost you any more to see her at 8 weeks rather than later.

Although you won't necessarily need any prenatal care before 12 weeks (esp since you've had a baby before), I'd call asap since you said she's on the only MW around... she might get booked quickly. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile">

I'd call to let them know right away, but you probably wouldn't have an appointment until 8-9 weeks if it's not your first baby.
