No, not when I'm in labor. But i'm VERY newly pregnant ( 3 weeks 4 days by charting) and have gotten a few positive pregnancy tests. I'm due early January but thinking i'll go about 2 weeks early (did with my normal baby) which puts us right after Christmas, not sure if that matters to a midwife or not. When would you make the initial contact with the midwife (i have 3 in mind). Thanks in advance. :

I don't see the problem in talking to MW's and finding the ones that do or don't work for you. You don't have to start appointments anytime soon.

Out of curiousity, when do appts. start. After my long pregnancy/birth history and not so good pregnancies births (probably related to care received) i'm not really eager to begin care (i'd be happy to go completely unassisted, hubby not so much. lol).

I'm sure it varies, but my M/W likes to see you for your first appt at around 10-12 weeks.

IIRC I had a first meeting appointment when I was about 8 weeks with DS1.

I'm due late Dec and have already spoken to midwives and chosen the duo we're going to use. No harm in sorting it out now. I wanted to choose early because I had severe morning sickness starting very early with my daughter's pg and wanted a care provider I already knew if/when it starts this time.

I got pregnant unexpectedly w/ my 1st baby & I saw my GP at 4wks 4d, talked to the MW on the phone for awhile at 5wks, and saw her at 5wks 5d. I just plain was uneducated about pregnancy/birth & didnt even know where to start. All I knew was I was terrified of hospitals/doctors/intervention. Now I know it really wasn't neccesary, but it was a lucky thing that I did call her, because she is the ONLY hb MW in my area, and she only takes 4 clients per month, and she really only works with people she wants to. When I saw her for my 11 wk appt., she had accepted her other 3 October clients.

Personally, I'd go ahead and start interviewing the MWs as soon as you feel ready. Morning sickness struck me hard, soon, and long, and I was so happy that I already had chosen my midwife in the early weeks of pregnancy. She was also a great resource over the phone, even though I wasn't physically able to make it to my first appointment until 16 weeks.

I'm pretty good friends with my m/w, so I called her before I even told my hubby. But I haven't been in for an official appointment yet. I'm somewhere around 10 weeks, and probably won't go in until after my first doctor's appointment (req'd by the state of SC) for bloodwork, etc. Then, at about 16-20 weeks, I'll start seeing her each month, and at 32-34 weeks, see her every week. Finding someone now that you mesh with and love is a great idea!

You don't really need to contact one until the end of the first trimester, unless you want to, but as a PP said, in some areas they take limited numbers of clients per month so you may want to find someone right away to make sure you can get your first choice of midwife.

Like the other ladies said, it wouldn't hurt to start interviewing them now and choosing the one you want. You shouldn't need to see them for a prenatal visit until around 10-12 weeks.

Especially with a birth around the holidays, I would start interviewing now. Sometimes they fill up fast.

I would call my midwife as soon as I knew I was pregnant. She only takes 4 clients a month (1 per week) and she books up fast. I saw her at 7 weeks pregnant and she already had her other 3 spots filled up.
