16MO DD had a cold and fever starting last Wednesday. I could tell she was in serious pain and she wouldn't sleep more than 15 minutes at a time, so I finally broke down and gave her Tylenol for the first time. It didn't really seem to do much. At night, she'd run 103 fevers and cough and not sleep at all. She did this for four nights and I'm starting to go a little crazy
After the fourth night, her nose started getting really green and clogged and I started to suspect ear infection. Waited this out for two more nights of no sleep and it doesn't look like it's going away. So we went to the doctor, diagnosed ear infection and prescribed amoxycillin.

So in summary - fever, coughing and green nose for 6 nights/7 days - is that long enough to wait to see if the ear infection will resolve on its own? She doesn't seem to be getting any better. I really really don't want to give her antibiotics. But obviously I don't want her to be in pain and I don't want it to keep getting worse until it's a real problem and I really really need some sleep! Time for antibiotics or can I keep waiting? Thanks!

Yes. The one time my 4 y/o daughter had oral antibiotics was because of an inner ear infection. Hers got so bad that pus eventually hardened and blocked the ear canal completely. Usually 7 days is long enough to wait as most viral infections will resolve by then. You can also try warm garlic oil in the ear. Hope your little one feels better soon.
