my 20mo dd has been using the potty consistently for at least a month. she uses it when we're at home. she's starting to wake up in the middle of the nite and tellin me she needs to pee.

when we go out, she wears diapers.

here's the thing.... whenever i've put training pants on her, she ususally wets them....probly cuz we sometimes used them as dipes when she was younger.

do you think it's time for an underwear trial run?
what did you do when they used the potty?

I think this is a common phenomenon...I figure my dd peed in her training pants b/c they basically felt like a cloth diaper. We had better luck going straight to underpants.

We bought underpants and would sometimes ask her if she wanted to wear them...one day she wanted to wear them out of the house and has been doing so every since, with relatively few accidents.

I think if you leave it up to her, she'll choose the underpants when she's ready. Obviously she has the control, she just has to be ready to give up her diapers.

for us, dd asked for underwear before she really started peeing consistantly in the potty chair. I ran to the store to get them! she had some accidents, but that was all part of the learning experience. 3 weeks later she was potty trained. That was June. She still has an accident now and again. I went right from diapers to underwear and cloth training pants.

She refused to wear diapers at night or anytime after those 3 weeks. I think its confusing for them to go back and forth. Jump in and do it. It could make the difference in how quickly it goes......

I agree with the previous posters. Even though Abi showed interest in wearing undies a few months ago, she always peed in them. She's been going consistently in her potty when bare bottomed (finally) while at home. So a couple days ago I let her have panties again and she's so improved putting them on/taking them off by herself. Finally, she's actually taking them off before she has to pee/poop! This has been a long time in coming. I think for a lot of kids it's best to start with nothing on at all.

I took her out with them on Monday and she wet in them, and her jeans got wet too. She was really bothered by that. Diapers don't do that of course! Took her out again yesterday to the library and we used the potty as soon as we got there. By the time we got home she told me there was pee in her panties but it was just a tiny spot and didn't soak through. She went fully on the potty after I helped her get undressed. I think the natural consequences of getting her clothes wet has been a great motivation for her to not pee in them. Even a few months ago though, she would have been too immature for this concept.

I really think it takes time with some of these toddlers to get the whole potty thing. I mean first they have to understand the concept of peeing/pooping. Then they have to learn to use the potty a couple times. Then they have to learn to control it long enough to get to the potty when they have to go. Finally they have to learn to take off their clothes to go, wipe, get dressed, and wash hands. It's a major thing to learn for these little ones.

thanx for the replies, mommas!

i think it's time for undies. on the topic of undies...has anyone had luck finding plain white ones? i've never seen any girls undies at the store that weren't blatantly(is that the rite word?) girly, or that didn't have cartoons on them.

oh and dd poo-ed in the regular toilet twice today w/o my prompting

Hanes makes some basic ones. I bought a pack of like 8 (I think) on the spur of the moment at the PX when Bonnie had a little accident. I think about half of them were plain white and the rest were just bright colored geometric patterns or flowers. I don't mind 'girlie' so much as I am adamant about avoiding licensed characters... which is REALLY hard. They are ALL OVER kids underpants. Or you could rob a bank and buy hanna anderson.

I bought some undies for dd at Target that just had some generic flowers, and a couple solid colored ones. I don't like the cartoon ones either, but up to a point I'm going to let dd pick her own from now on. No Spongebob or Barbie, but if she wants to get some Care Bear ones or something I don't mind.

My dd insisted on picking them out.....and she asks for certain ones to wear. SHe loves ladybugs and butterflys, and I found some cute ones at ROSS. SHe also like her NEMO ones from Target. They were a great incentive on staying dry........

I really didn't practice potty training with dd- I was busy and pregnant and one day just took the diapers away and put them in the closet for the next baby (they were Motherease one size dipes) and gave her underwear. She picked them out herself.

She had accidents for 3 days and on the 4th day was pretty much pted- I put her in cloth traiing pants and she peed in those- but not in underwear.

Dd knows she can run around naked in the kitchen and adjacent bathroom freely, with limitations on naked priviliges elsewhere.

She has been asking for panties, and I explained that once she used the toilet, she can wear them. Well I had to keep my promise earlier this week. Dd had her panties on for the first time === and wet the kitchen floor.

So we cleaned up, she chose another pair (hanes, lots of hearts, flowers, glittery elastic, but no characters). This time she ran to the bathroom and pulled them off in time to get to the toilet (actually it's a potty chair that looks like a miniature toilet. I got it because she really wanted to be up on the regular toilet but it was breaking my back. She used it the day after I put it out and she calls it the "babysize toilet.").

I think she first thought the panties were like a diaper, and learned through trial and error that they are not.

i have another question: what do you do when you're out on a long car trip or on the hwy, and your toddler needs to "go" but you can't get to a restroom yet??? i was thinking of bringing a lil potty with us in the car..... does anyone else do this?

oh and thank you everyone for your help

That's great! For long car trips, she pretty much squatted behind the bushes to go and we brought the potty ring for park toilets. A little potty in the car is a great idea.
