In general, where do you think the various vaccination trends are moving? For one, do you think our rights to not vaccinate are headed toward more or less freedom? Also, do you think more or less people are choosing to not vaccinate than in previous years? It's obvious that the pharmas are going to keep creating new vaccines, so thier trend is towards more vaccines, and more requirements.

I don't know, where do you see things in 10, 20, 30 years?

What do you think needs to be done to change the trends?

My predictions:

*Many more states will enact philosophical exemptions and none of the existing religious/philo exemptions will be repealed. Ultimately, West Virginia and Mississippi will allow exemptions, but the process will probably be stricter than most states.

*The trend seems to be that more parents will choose to be selective and/or delay vaccination or forego all vaccinations. The number of exemptors is only going to go up.

*Lots of vaccines are already in the pipelines as we speak for many common viruses and STD's. In order to increase and maintain compliance, those vaccines will ultimately be mandated for daycare, school and college entry.

*More vaccines will be required to enter college, including Gardasil, which will be available for males soon.

*An annual influenza vaccine will be mandated in most, if not all, states for daycare, school and college entry. FluMist will be administered in the school setting in order to facilitate compliance.

*This is already happening and will continue --- huge push to get adults (particularly female/prenatal & postnatal) to comply with adult immunization recommendations. Workplace immunization programs will skyrocket in order to increase compliance with the recommendations.

*More state laws enacted in order to force healthcare workers to comply with the adult immunization recommendations

*More vaccines will be indicated at birth in order to alleviate the crowded infant schedule

*The indication ages for those vaccines indicated for younger children will be lowered to infancy. For example:

***Hep A from 12 months to 2 months (or at birth given with Hep B in a combo vax)
***Meningitis from 2 years [coming soon!] to 2 months (or at birth)
***DTaP (or a pertussis-only vax) at birth
***Gardasil (in infancy) - don't shake your head, they're already talking about the possiblity

*Booster doses will be added for many of the vaccines - first one up . . . Gardasil.

I don't understand how the disconnects that already exist, and would seem to be increasing, will be resolved. More state requirements at the same time the general public increasingly does not feel the need to fully follow the schedule creates a growing chasm between the wishes of the people and the law. Will easier exemption laws just be an escape valve to give some people an out, so legislators don't get too much pressure about the new laws they pass?

And I know I've only rarely talked in any depth about my views on vaccination because most people think everyone should just follow the recommended schedule--and some people get pretty irate at any other suggestion. So as more people don't follow the recommended schedule, how does that play out? Does society become more accepting of parents making their own choices?

From reading here, it seems like the climate in Canada, for example, at least legally, is quite different from the US. But I don't understand the cultural part, since the CDC certainly plays up the herd immunity argument.

I agree with LI. They'll also combine as many vaxes into one shot as they possibly can, because it's much easier to get parents to comply that way.

The age lowering thing is what I think makes me the saddest.

Get 'em as newborns, that way you'll never know what thier potential was and they'll never be able to blame the vaccines since there will be no pre/post changes to notice.

So sad

I really wonder if that isn't the real motivation. I know I sound like a conspiracy theorist...but I can't help but wonder

And another part of the puzzle with that, is the whole "make everyone in the developed world get the vax so it becomes cheaper to produce".
Vaccine bioethicists think that forcing the vaccines on babies who don't really need them is morally ok, since the practice makes those vaccines affordable for developing nations to purchase.

That makes me ill too. Another thing...I would think that if you vaccinate your newborn, it is harder to tell if they have had a reaction or not. I mean, you have no before and after behavior/development to go by. That, and people are more likely to research vaccines as their children grow older. If they've already had it at birth, there isn't much you can do about it. Get 'em now!

and it also takes advantange of the immediate postpartum period, at which time new mothers are particularly vulnerable to scaremongering. coupled with the current birth climate of mostly hospital births with more and more interventions, it's all a mother can do to keep herself from being sliced and diced when giving birth, no less preventing her baby from being a human pincushion.

As long as a person can claim a personal/religious exemption for their vaccine status is my own personal bottom line.

If you cannot control or have any say about what is injected into your own body, what rights does anyone have?

I just want to expand on the college entry prediction --- these are the vaccines they will ultimately require for college entry in order to "catch" the ones the state mandates missed when these kids were in school:

HPV
Varicella
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis A
Meningitis
Tdap

Do the rules of exemptions apply to college? Does it depend on private vs public?

I agree with most pp's that there will be increasingly more vaxes and more aggressive schedules that will evenutally get "too greedy" and have more and more people question the practice and opt out. I DO worry about exemptions being revoked, though. I think that threat is real.

What is sad is that there will be very different definitions of healthy in the same generations of kids. We will continue to accept these autoimmune disorders to the point that they are normal. (well, not US here).

Sort of like the vast chasm between families who have whole foods diets and those that have processed foods diets, too. I just see real health mostly availble to a select few, when of coures, I wish that it was the norm.

FTR, some states already require a tetanus booster, meningitis vaccine and varicella vaccine for college entry.
