OK lots of people have told me I can cd for A LOT CHEAPER than what I am seeing. I've been on a couple sites and the fitteds are 15-20 bucks EACH!
I'm under the impression I would need at LEAST a dozen of these, and that's if I want to do laundry EVERY DAY!!

Where are *you* going?!

You can cd very inexpensively if you go with prefolds. Fitteds cost more, especially those made by work at home moms because they are generally nicer quality, better fabrics and cuter. You can get less expensive fitteds that are mass produced but they are still a lot more than prefolds.

Motherease (not sure of the site addy) makes a one size fitted so it would last you from (approx.) 8-35 lbs. which saves a lot. Growing Greens makes a one sized fitted too - I have seen those at www.naturalbabies.com

Another thing to remember is that CDing is a bigger investment initially but once you have your stash you dont spend anything. As opposed to buying sposies which doesnt seem like a lot each time you buy them but you are buying them every week (or 2 weeks or whatever) for 2+ years. If you do the math you are saving a TON - just that you are spending it all at once.

kissaluvs http://www.kissaluvs.com You can find retailers for these through the site there.

Bumkin's has AIO's that run cheaper then any other AIO http://www.bumkin.com You can look up retailers there too

Prefolds are very cheap and many people use those.

Fitted diapers cost more because they are labor intensive.

Manufactured diapers such as kissaluv and Bumkin are cheaper.

Although Wahm diapers may seem expensive to the newcomer in diapering. The prices in most cases do not reflect a wage but rather a slight mark up on supplies needed to construct the products.

Here you can find a huge amount of different diaper manufacturers and wahms. http://borntolove.com/resources/

Keep in mind also.....you can have a couple different kinds.

Some prefolds, some fitted, some pockets......know what I mean? And you can sell any that you end up not liking.

What type are you thinking will work best for you?

You might try www.growmearainbow.com or pm todzwife (Shandelle) about making you prefitteds. These are prefolds that have been converted to fitteds by adding in elastic and tabs. I
them! They are easy to care for, a very adjustable fit and if I remember right only about $7 each. I wouldn't get trimmed ones..or as your baby grows, the rise might be too short, but the reg. prefitteds should be sufficient for a looooong time. You can just fold over the extra rise right now. They can be pinned or snappi'd. They are pretty darn trim, too!! Seriously...if I didn't already have all of the gorgeous fitteds I've got, and knew then what I know now..I'd have bought all prefitteds and trimmed prefolds! I just got sucked into the cute factor and now I can't give them up! :LOL

If you wanna cd pricey you can, if you wanna cd cheap you can. It all depends on your primary reasons for cding. No one said you had to pay $15-20 for fitteds to cd.

We diapered incredibly cheap with our first two kids, out of neccessity. They had nothing but prefolds, cheap covers and a couple AIOs I'd managed to find in thrift stores. Now on kiddo #3 and getting ready for #4 finances are not why we're using cloth, I don't *have* to diaper on the cheap for these two. I've made the decision to buy the more pricey stuff because I want to, not out of need. I also understand how much sposie's cost can add up month after month, and even tho these two babes will be in nearly all fitteds I still won't have spent as much as sposies would require. Another aspect often left out in start-up price concerns is resale value. If the dipes are taken care of well they can very often be resold to fund nearly all of the next size. Or save them for the next kid, more bang for your buck.

In another month you can get on the TP, there's always ebay, diaperpin, etc.. If you'd start a thread saying "I'm looking for x type of dipe in y price range, can you help me?" you'll get lotsa links.

you can definitely find cheaper fitteds or go the prefold route. cheaper fitteds can be found used on tp, diperpin, or fleamarket (pm me if you want links) or sometimes new from various wahm. i know i love the fitteds i have from sweet dream diapers--she has a store on ebay (pm if you want the link). they work like a dream on my son and i bought in bulk and each fittted was $4-$5 depending on size. she has some package deals with lots of diapers, covers, doublers, etc. to get started. i did splurge on some organic fitted one size ($10) but i knew i could use them for multiple kids and have used them on my son from size small (16lbs) to large/xl (30lbs) and he still has room to grow in them.

Prefolds, baby! Get thee to the TP as quick as you can and get a few wooly things for cheap and a nice stack of pretty fluffy PFs, 2 snappis and call it a day!
That's what I have done (well, mostly
there might also be a couple of little splurges in there) and I love every minute!

Seconding MrsDimples. And if you want nice colorful pretty stuff, break out your creative inner self and solid color dye or tyedye those prefolds up. Just don't be like me and hang unrinsed prefolds next to the washer and then let dd help with the washing.
: (she put a red dyed unrinsed prefold in the washer with our ENTIRE stash and it's all pink now despite 6 washes and rinses yesterday
: ). That was mama's fault for putting it there. She was being helpful and didn't realize. She just thought it was ready for washing and I didn't pay attention.

Seriously, prefolds, snappi's, and wool or PUL covers are all you need. It CAN be quite cheap. Brand new you could get 1 dozen premium prefolds for like $25. Two snappi's brand new would be about $5. And Proraps first quality brand new are about $8.50each and you would need possibly 3? So let's just say $25 for 3 covers plus $50 for 2dozen prefolds and $5 for 2 snappi's. Brand new stuff from a wahm store washing every other day would be roundabouts $55. Find a place like www.kellyscloset.com or www.nopins4baby.com or www.littlesproutsdiapers.com with free shipping. And you could probably diaper from 6 months to about potty learning with that original investment with only a few extra bucks for sizing up in covers. A lot of people like to size up to toddler prefolds when they get around 2 or so because that little bit of extra bulk helps with bigger toddler pees but you don'tn have to. You woud spend probably about $75-100 to diaper your baby altogether. And if you knit or sew, you could bring down that cost even further. And that's all with brand new stuff. Think of the cost savings if you use the TP! You don't have to diaper with $20 fitteds and then expensive covers too. Think about the cost of disposables. Apparently they cost arond $3000 from birth to potty learning. You would have to buy some pretty expensive cloth to make it to $3000!!!! Especially if you resell on the TP!

I can't GET to the TP yet!! Have to be on 2 months........I don't think I can get there till JULY!!!!!!!!!!!

I do have a friend willing to help me sew. She told me to find a pattern, she'd help. (I think this is in part for experience so she can do it when she has her own baby LOL) I also have friends who knit for wool covers. I don't know what I'd have to bribe a knitter with, but I could probably get somebody to do it.

And I am *really* dense on all this, I'm going to have to see it on my baby I guess to get the idea.

Exactly. Don't fall for the "reseale" line if you are actually planning to use those dipes as DIPES. In my house at least, since I can't go a full three weeks without washing
stuff gets used and abused. Wool I can sometimes resell, but dipes - forget about it. You can plan on selling things you get and don't end up liking (thus, USING) but the stuff you use is probably gonna be toast when you're done. JME.

I did almost all prefolds then a few covers and I did have some wonderoos and a few other pockets until dd outgrew them and I sold them on ebay and got back what I paid for them. (I bought them new!) So really I didn't spend anything to use them for the months that I did. It is a bigger expense upfront but it saves you so much later, I don't need rash cream, I use cloth wipes and then the cd of course and I'm saving so much. I used to use disposables and I was spending aroud $50 a month for diapers, rash cream and wipes. I spent $200 on my starter stash and then the $40 I got back when I resold those so I can subtract that and it's going strong a year later, and I have a small stash so I wash and wash and wash and really wear on them and still not a problem
. So for 4 months of sposies I have cd'd for 15 months.
