I am researching eco friendly sand & water activity tables right now as well. So far, all I have come across is using the recycled plastic raised bed type kits for sandboxes & gardens.

Nothing for water or combined activity yet.

I wonder how long before all manufactures just start using recycled milk jugs?

So funny. Was just catching up on some reading over at the soft landing & came across a post on International PlayThings providing some updates on toys they have changed to make BPA, PH/PVC free, including the Sand & Water Table.

I guess the question is how do you make sure you get an item that is free of those chemicals & not one that was left over from their old stock, before the change was made??

I was reading on other threads that some mama's used under the bed storage bins to make them. I am using all my under the bed storage bins for actual storage right now & trying to decide on buying more of them for playing with or buying a table dedicated for that kind of play.

I like that this iplay one has a tight fitting cover that is also a roadway for additional play & the legs come off & everything stores compactly.

But DD did play in the bucket we were using yesterday to clean up some backyard toys. Water, 7th Gen dish detergent & some sponges & she was thrilled.

We're planning to use an under-bed storage container for a sand table this summer-I love the idea of being able to close it up tightly so the vast number of neighborhood strays we have don't start using it as a litter box. My dad made me a wooden one when I was little and it was great until our cats discovered it.

For water play we use a bucket and when we're done we use the water for our plants. We do this nearly everyday when it's nice. DS could spend hours playing in the water. For water toys we mostly use our plastic recycling containers and a funnel.

We have this one and love it! I've only tried it with water in both sides. I think DS is a little too young for sand. It has a hard top that snaps on so the table can be used as a play surface. I think the top has a road on in. I'm intending to bring this indoors in the fall and fill with dried beans. We bought ours at kidssurplus.com for <$50.
