I'm thinking ahead to Christmas. I'd really like to get DD a doll of her own after she fell in love with an old Cabbage PAtch Kid of mine. She's only 9 months, so I think I can make a switch.

But which toys are not PVC?

Any good resources for toys out there?

TIA!

Jessica,

We ordered a Waldorf-style doll for Elliott's first Christmas. Magic Cabin sells a pre-assembled doll, the pattern only, or a kit with all of the necessary items. We chose the kit and had super sewer grandmom do the assembly. Baby Laeverneus (or Ernie ) has held up well over the last four years, with only a minor amputation to correct, so I think the kit was a great choice for us (I think the kit is half the price of the assembled doll). The nice thing to is that the kit can be customized with specific hair and skin colors.

I thought we might buy Elliott a bigger kid plastic doll when he was older, but he still enjoys baby Ernie, so we've never bought a vinyl/plastic model.

Happy Shopping!

If you want cloth dolls there are great dolls at most of the "waldorf" toy sites. I've had bad luck with M.C., so I always recommend novanatural.com or rosiehippo.com. Have fun--I'm awaiting my doll kit now from weirdolls.com (if you're crafty and wanna make the doll yourself they have awesome stuff)

hello!

i have to admit this is a pet peeve of mine - companies that knowingly sell items that can potentially harm our children!

here are two links about manufacturer's who use/don't use phthalates in their toys. the toy safety link is more updated but the greenpeace link is useful as well. There are also a bunch of catalogue places where you can buy wooden toys - i got a copy of rosie hippos and magic cabin catalogues in the mail recently and they both look like they have some pretty good stuff - haven't ordered from either though.

good luck!

Ogranic Bebe sells toys made by a German company called Haba (www.haba.de). They are maple and beech wood with non-toxic paint. I just ordered three infant toys - they are beautiful and well worth the 9.95 I paid for each.

If you like the Haba toys (Organic Bebe has a fairly good selection) try www.maukilo.com - they have a great selection of cloth and wooden toys (all from Europe I believe). And if I read their site correctly - shipping is a flat 4.95. They seem to have an extensive selection of non-pvc toys.

Hope this helps.

i'm interested in this, too.

dd got a baby doll last year for christmas from her aunt and it's gone in and out of favor, but right now is hugely in favor as i am very pregnant. the doll is plastic and has sort of a bean bag body which i think is filled with PVC pellets. i seem to remember reading that on the packaging or doll itself. the thing that gets me, though, is it's scented -- sort of a baby powder fragrance. i hate artificial scents of any kind, but i also have read that typically they're carried by phthalates. bleah!

i'd love to get dd a new doll when the new baby comes in hopes that she would take to it, but i don't know if she will or not seeing as how she looooooooves this thing so much. she's really into the doll's tiny little toes and the detail of the plastic, so i doubt if the waldorf type dolls would go over so well. i also find them a little creepy with no nose and what all to tell the truth. i would gladly get one if i thought she'd go for it, though, but i just don't. she's really into dressing the baby doll and she's really into it being a baby baby doll and not a little kid doll.

does anybody have any suggestions for a detailed, non-PVC, phthalate-free, dressable, BABY doll?

i've googled til my eyes are crossed and i'm just not getting anywhere. i do like the dressable dolls on that http://www.maukilo.com/ site. thanks grandmasgirl, but would love to find a BABY since there will be a new one in our house soon.

TIA for any help!

Thank you for all the replies!! The suggested websites are GREAT!!

Beanma - try Corolle dolls. I emailed the company and they said there are no PVC or pthalate (sp?) materials. They are a different kind of vinyl, though. They're really pretty little dolls and they do have a few baby styles. (Congratulations, BTW!)

Thanks again everyone!

This is good info. DS has a plastic doll that I got free at a garage sale in order to add weight to his baby stroller. He's showing interest in it and I thought I'd try to make one. I just got a Curious George stuffed animal today because he loves his CG jack-in-the-box and opposites board book. I thought I'd wait with the doll and he may bond with George (then we'll get him a human doll when I have another human baby).
