I am asking on behalf of my SIL because she keeps asking me the question. My niece is about to turn 6, but is very small for her age. She is 41 or 42 pounds, between 41 and 43 inches tall. She has been in an expired Britax Roundabout, but now weighs too much. My SIL has moved her to an Evenflo high back booster. Somebody trustworthy gave it to her, it's not been used and is about a year old. She actually sits pretty well in it, unless she falls asleep and then she slumps over. She doesn't really want her in the booster, but she knows she can't stay in the Roundabout. We have a Marathon for our dd that expires in January. We will not use it after that. I know she will ask for it for her dd. Would it be safer to be harnessed in the expired seat or in the booster? These are the only options. She is a widow, barely making it on her own right now. She has signed up with the Kyle ****** Foundation, but hasn't heard anything from them yet. So either way, this would hopefully be only temporary. So which is the safer alternative?

I don't think anyone here can tell you that - in both cases there is no telling WHAT could happen in an accident - whether the slumping in the booster would hurt her or whether the expired seat would fail her.

Personally, I'd go with the booster. I wouldn't trust an expired seat, not even a Britax. At least the booster is still recent and at least she sits in it well the majority of the time....

Out of those 2 options I have to vote for the booster. It's not perfect but an expired seat is absolutely not safe.

You could sell the covers from both the Marathon and the Roundabout and maybe fund an Apex 65. They usually run around $100. Albeebaby has them right now for $90 and I've heard that Big Lots has them for $65 (but I don't know if that's right). Also keep in mind the Apex requires a headrest behind it because the Apex headrest is not reinforced.

I'd go with the booster, but I'd be sure to keep her awake in the car!
