Pretty pathetic but not surprising.....

Not that they're worried or anything. But the White House evidently leaves little to chance when it comes to protests within eyesight of the president. As in, it doesn't want any.

A White House manual that came to light recently gives presidential advance staffers extensive instructions in the art of "deterring potential protestors" from President Bush's public appearances around the country.

Among other things, any event must be open only to those with tickets tightly controlled by organizers. Those entering must be screened in case they are hiding secret signs. Any anti-Bush demonstrators who manage to get in anyway should be shouted down by "rally squads" stationed in strategic locations. And if that does not work, they should be thrown out.

"Rally squads"! Hah, others might conjur up the image of good squads.

So, it should be SOP for a government to "shout down" protesters? Throw out protesters? If so, that hypervigilence to keep Dear Leader (or the next president) from seeing dissent will get you this...

Feds pay $80,000 over anti-Bush T-shirts

A couple arrested at a rally after refusing to cover T-shirts that bore anti-President Bush slogans settled their lawsuit against the federal government for $80,000, the American Civil Liberties Union announced Thursday.

Nicole and Jeffery Rank of Corpus Christi, Texas, were handcuffed and removed from the July 4, 2004, rally at the state Capitol, where Bush gave a speech. This case was mentioned in the OP article and where the WH manual was discovery during litigation.

Only a year and a half more.....counting the days. I hope this nation can begin to heal once he's out of office. It may be a long shot to feel that way, but we have to have hope. It's the only way we can begin to dig ourselves out of the mess our administration has made.
