I was at my garage sale today, and I was knitting something for the store, and this woman asked what I was doing. I told her what it was ... a wool soaker. And she said "do you sell things?" I said I did on the Internet. She said "oh.... well do you sell things on Ebay?" She wanted to know if she could hire me to show her how to sell things.

Anyway, I was telling her that if she had a certain item that she *needed* to get a certain amount out of it, to start it at that price. I said "for example, if I have a cloth diaper that I want to sell for $ 6, I will start it at that. If it doesn't sell, at least I didn't undersell myself." She looked at me and said "WHO would pay $ 6.00 for a cloth diaper?!!?!?!?!"

I *almost* told her about MDC. Then I decided that she didn't need to be enlightened about the wonderful world of CD'ing because she just didn't *want* to get it.

Just thought I would share.

Don't feel too bad - I had a lady give me a big ole huff & puff routine because I was asking $2.50 CDN for diapers at my garage sale a few weeks back.

I agree - that is my personal impression about a lot of things. For instance, cabbage patch kids, beanie babies, collectible barbies, Gucci, many name brand clothing items, Rolex ...

Diapers have value to us b/c we place value on them.

Exactly!! They view diapers as a use 'em and throw 'em away don't even think about it item. We view diapers as a precious gift to our child's bottom and the enviroment.

Even my mom- who loves that I'm using cloth- is baffled at why I'd pay for wool or hemp, or even pockets or fitteds. She thinks prefolds and a pull on cover is "good enough". I figure with the money I'm saving my ds deserves better and I can afford it. If I couldn't afford it I'd use prefolds and cheap covers, but since I can why not let me enjoy my obsession.

When I first started CDing, I showed my mom my beautiful stash of WAHM diapers (most of which cost $15-$20), adn she loved them. But then she said, "Wow, I'll bet they're expensive...are they like $5 each?" HA!!! When I told her they were $10-$15 (couldn't bear to tell her the whole truth), her jaw about hit the floor. I cannot imagine what she'd saw about RB $50 diapers!
But honestly, I totally think they're all works of art, and totally worth the money. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Or should I say,
"Comfort is in the bum of the wearer!"

Yes, some people don't WANT to get it, as you say. I give those folks the opportunity to know and know they can always ask, but I don't waste too much energy. My energy is better served elsewhere!

i find myself fibbing about what they cost too.
it justifies me saying i'm using them to save money and to hide my addiction!!

I've just started calling it a collection so I don't feel so silly paying $15+. Up through the 10-20 lb dipes, I gave myself a $15 limit. Now I figure that I can buy the $17 or $18 dipes used to bring the price down a couple bucks, but hey, if I can get myself 2 BBH slots, I shouldn't care that they cost $18 each. I draw the line at $20 these days... At least I can knit my own soakers.

People don't want to see the value in cloth. It's easier to say "disposables are 20$ a package, and cloth is 20$ each" (obviously that's +/- a few bucks) they see it as one diaper and not the *multiple* uses I get from it.

People view value and a "bargain" VERY differently. The other day I was in the dollar store, and there were two women looking at the mini packages of generic dollar store sposies. They kept saying what a good deal it was, and I pointed out that Pampers and other 'high end' disposables are about 25 cents each, and 'lower end' diapers are about 20 cents. These were 3 packs for a dollar - making them 33.3 cents each. Hardly a bargain. They totally didn't want to see it.

That is exactly what this woman said "you can get a dozen diapers for that amount now" and another woman who was standing there said "no you can't. You obviously haven't been out in the market for these things."

Ok.... now I will get off my "cloth box"
