I mean - ones like Kushies (all types), Indisposables, Bumkins, etc ?

If it weren't for those easily obtainable, affordable diapers, very few of the people I know who do cloth diaper would have even considered it - myself included.

The more I read here, it seems like it's some kind of evil thing to use these diapers.

I don't understand WHY though.

I cannot afford WAHM diapers, I cannot afford 'sposies (not that I'd use them even if I could). Starting with thrift store Indisposables was pretty much my only option. And a few prefolds that I never did get the hang of.

Oh - and Kushies covers, or pull-on nylon covers (Gerber, etc).

I don't think those diapers are evil or using them is evil at all
Cloth diapering is cloth diapering in my book

I started out with Wal-Mart gerber birdseye weave & cheapie plastic pants. They didn't work well for my DS the covers tore so darn fast....Then I tried Motherease & the list has continued.

I think its awesome whenever I see a Mama cloth diapering

I don't judge her or her system because that is not my job

I didn't find out about WAHM diapers until lots of research & finding this board. I worked out of the home up until a year ago May 2003. I now want to support WAHM's since I'm able

I think that the reason they are often talked about in less than loving terms is because people tend to like to support SAHMs and WAHMs when they can.

However, I think that all cloth diapers are absolutely wonderful, and so much better for children and the environment than disposables.

Maybe it's just a pregnant hormonal thing then - but it really does feel like my "stash" of cheapo diapers is seen as trash to many mamas here.

I understand the wanting to support WAHM, but really - I could get 1 diaper for my child for $25 USD, or I could get several diapers for $25 CDN.

I don't have a single WAHM diaper (okay - unless my own home-made pieces of junk count. Yes, I call them pieces of junk because they are - they're falling apart, the barely fit, they just are NOT good things that I made). I would love to have some, but feeding my family is more important.

I can't contribute to 99% of the threads here, because I've never heard of most of the products being talked about, and those that I have heard of - I've never seen.

Okay - I'm bowing out now, I really think I'm just TOO emotional about this.
Bloody hormones !

well, honestly, i haven't found a wahm cover that is reliable for us as many of the mass produced covers (nikky cotton covers, bumkins wraps, alexis featherlites, etc.). i do like supporting wahms so i try to buy from wahm shops (natural babies, babyworks, etc.) who sell the mass produced stuff online whenever possible. plus, i don't know how you can look down on chinese prefolds. some people, myself included, may be prefold challenged, but man they are a workhorse dipe for sure!!

edited to add: i would hope that no one here would make you feel bad about the cloth diapers you use. i mean the whole point is squishy soft cloth on your baby's bottom instead of paper and chemicals. enjoy your stash. so what if it's not what the hyenas here use. you're frugal and environmental!!

I know what you mean. I love buying from WAHM shops that sell variety of mass-produced stuff. (I considered Fuzzi Bunz mass produced...am I wrong?) I have some Gerber prefolds (they don't absorb as much as CPFs imo) and Gerber covers (work great for us!). I prefer reliability ... I love the cute stuff but it does seem too expensive sometimes.

Sure, it would be nice to have fancy diapers. However, I like being able to order something and get it rather than having to stalk all the time. It's the practical side of me...

I only bought ones that wahm sell to stay at home that are mass produced. I love them. I know what you mean when I first came here I had no idea what they were talking about. I just don't open the ones about hyena dipes and read other threads like how to get stink out or something like that. It used to make me feel poor that I couldn't buy the wahm made diapers. But I'm happy with my stash and it will get us throught many babies. Even now that I sell them I have only added 3 diapers to his stash. Because I need the money coming in from my store. Not to spend on more diapers for Noah. I hope you feel better soon. You are doing a wonderful thing for your baby and the environment. Cloth diapering is cloth diapering...some people just can afford to pay more for it.

There are a lot of great diapers out there that dont cost nearly 25 and are WAHM made! Any cloth is fine. I dont look down on any cloth diaper at all, but I prefer to buy from WAHM's cause I havent found a mass produced diaper to be quite as good as the WAHM ones!

I don't use "exciting" cloth either- but like the other posters have said. CLOTH IS CLOTH!! I use mostly PF and covers, and I love it. I love not buying disposibles and spending our $$ on things like the house note instead of Pampers.

Buck up, hon.
There are lots of us out there that don't have the "designer" diapes. We are all in this cloth thing together, regardless of which kind of cloth our babes are in.

I don't think they are thought of as evil.

I do think that for what they cost they aren't as nice and don't work as well.
There are so many WAHM diapers that cost the same or less that are less popular and easily attainable.

You're supporting your own. Go team Canada!!

Stoney Creek

I spent part of every childhood summer there, I am homesick too.

LB, I know what you mean, I felt somewhat embarrassed of my "junk" stash when I first started CDing my big girl. I had no Hyena dipes (I didn't even know what a hyena was) but our simple, cheap stash served us very well and did what I had intended it to do-save us money, and keep cloth on her bum.

That said, I do have a lot of the "nicer" Wahm dipes now, but I still often reach for my well-worn, soon to be on their 3rd bum MEOS first a large part of the time.

And the Kushies that I used I gave to a Mama in need who couldn't afford to buy either throwaways, or a stash of her own. She thought/thinks they are the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Awww...((hugs mama))
I like both
Really, I think both types of these work fine. I started out with commercial stuff way back, and I still like it today
I have tried some wahm stuff that was ick, and some that was wow!! I love variety, and knowing that I can still obtain my fave mass-produced stuff in case all else fails, cheers me and sustains me considerably!! I am trying to save up for ME stuff right now. Since, I too, have a small budget to work with. The wahm's shops I like have beautiful products, and I love to be able to help them out!! They are total sweethearts and I feel good buying at least one diaper from them when I am able to. But, for the beginning of our baby's cloth journey, we only used mass-produced stuff...Indian pf's, dappis pull-ons....Then, we worked up to Disposanots, a few odds and ends and that's it
Our stash is comprised of pockets, cuz that's what works for us. I personally love, love, love Bumpy's and Nikkys. And don't even dis my Dappi Pull-ons!!
I also, without any kind of guilt or shame
, like Kushies Classics. I find that they are so soft and absorbent. I used to love these without covers on my oldest. Nikkys made up most of our first babies stash also. Its whatever works for you and that you can afford budget wise. I applaud ANY mama who makes the decision to use cloth, whether its readily available to whether it's stitched by a wahm in her own home. Fluff is fluff, and ALOT better than disposables, any way you look at it!!

Amen mama!
I support a WAHM whenever I can but I started out with gauze prefolds, Kooshies, and Gerber plastic pants, too. Nothing wrong at all with them!
