So, its nap time at my house and I am watching my usual 2 shows on tv and playing on MDC. Both shows are on TLC, Bringing Home Baby one after another So, heres the mom, giving the baby a bottle, saying "I'd really like to breastfeed, but the baby just wont latch on right, I dont understand why?" A few minutes later (in the middle of the night now though) they show her trying to lacth the baby on, he's fussing and so she gives him another bottle, saying "I thought breast feeding was going to be easier, he just wont latch on, so I have to give him a bottle" The baby is 36 hours old or something along those lines..... : Oh, and they got him circed and she was saying, "I just hate that his little weewee hurts him so much..." Then why'd you hack half of it off!?

I had to quit watching all those shows--between the unnecessary c-sections and the BFing issues...my husband banned me because I'd be yelling at the TV.

My husband cancelled our cable after being home while I watched one of those shows. I was yelling at the tv and it freaked him out, lol. There were other reasons to cancel cable, but that was a major one.

Isn't one or both of those shows sponsered by Nestle? I totally think that major advertisers can influence content if they want to.

I do wonder why on earth don't these women seek help? Or maybe they are and they are getting lousy help off camera......

What I don't understand and I'm sure it's marketing-like nestle or someone prob supports the show- is why they don't show more natural childbirth and breastfeeding on the shows. The ones they show are so far and few, also has anyone noticed the cesarean rise on the shows? I know the rates are high in cesareans, but why keep showing them on tv like that. And most seem to be optional, not health related.

I watched those shows at one time, but I quit for the same reasons.

House of Babies I love! You should check it out, its MW deliveries at a birth center.

ditto!

I hate all of those birthing shows. The one show I actually do watch is House of Babies. I love it! It plays on Discovery Health channel. It's about a birthing center in Miami. I've seen them all now though.

Interesting thought about the product endorsement. I wouldn't be surprised.

I LOVE that show!!! It is awsome! Those other shows would just piss me off because it seems like every single birth or atleast 90% of them would end in c-section and I just didn't understand it! Not to mention all the poor excuses for not b-fding.

Those shows drive me crazy too. I saw one the other day where the woman got induced and got an epidural early in the morning, then laid in bed all day. By 11 at night she was only at 3 cm so they told her she needed an emergency c-section because the baby was getting tired and they'd broken her water that morning. The "emergency" c-section waited awhile for the doctor to get there even! I feel so sad for those women who just do what they are told and don't have a clue...

I don't understand why a baby would be able to latch onto an artificial nipple but not a real one :

It can happen...it happened with a woman who was in my childbirth class. We gave birth at a birth center with terrfiic midwives, one of whom was also an IBCLC and they both worked to get this little one to latch...and she never did for some reason.

Sometimes being tounge-tied is the problem as well...or the baby can't open wide enough....

At the same time these stupid shows make it look like that no one can breastfeed though, and they never show the moms looking for help.

I can't stand what all the pps have mentioned... on one show the dad was changing the little boy's diaper and the mom was fumbling around for the gauze and vaseline and commenting about how he was still "upset" about his circumcision Man, circumcising sure makes everything so much easier, doesn't it : not to mention better for the baby

I was impressed by the twin surrogacy show tonight a bit... they didn't automatically give her a section at first (after she pushed for two hours they did) which really surprised me. I thought twins were automatically a c-sec most hospitals.

All the moms in the shows I've seen who DO end up "able" to breastfeed complain about it too :

We don't have cable... my friend does

anyway, there was a young couple with a little boy (i'd bet some big money he was circ'd) and they were complaining of money being so tight, while buying formula! plus, the mother was a SAHM, and chose to formula feed?? ST!!! it made me want to rip my hair out!

I saw that show, the mom had ADD and was all worried about how that would affect her, so i wonder if that disorder had anything to with her not wanting to keep going with breastfeeding?
