Why is clumping clay litter bad?

Some research suggests that when cats ingest it (through their licking) it can clump in their digestive system, causing health problems ranging from minor to lethal.

I believe there are also concerns about how the clay is mined.

Can't dig up links right now--maybe someone else will provide.

To be safe, we avoid clumping clay and use corn- or wheat-based clumping litters instead.
