Ok, so we have a miniature poodle we adopted from the HS about 3 weeks ago. Previously I asked in here about why he wasn't playing and why he's such a serious little dog and I got some great advice to just wait and be patient. Well, he's a total nutball now - VERY silly and playful in the last week. It's great!

Now, since he's come out of his shell more, there is this weird thing he's done a few times - sometimes after he goes potty he does that "kick". Most of the time it's just a quick "kick kick kick" and off we go. Today he got REALLY into kicking and started growling while he was doing it. It wasn't a typical growl, though, it was really silly - like, "RRRRrrrrrrRRRRRrrrrrRRRRrrrrr", almost like he was reving up! It was hysterical, dd and I were laughing our heads off. He did it right after he pooped, and then again later on the walk maybe another 3-4 times!

Each time he was acting happy and excited, bright eyes, bouncing around, and in a very silly mood right after he did it. I just want to make it clear that I have no reason to believe it was a "growl" or a warning of any type, just a weird silly playful sounding growl.

Is there an official "dog behavior" explanation for this other than he's just a silly little dude? lol

I think it's a "Hey look at what a tough guy I am" kind of thing.

I love when they do that!

One of our poms is notorious for it. We call it "the moonwalk" or his "wardance." He'll do it after he's gone potty (usually #2) or feeling frisky or macho.

It's territorial trait called "visual marking." Wolves do it in the wild to leave marks on the ground to emphasize marking their territory. Both little and big dogs do it (with front or back or all fours), but I see it the most in the tiny guys. I think it's their way to feel extra big.

We've had dogs do it too, and then some that didn't ever do it. I agree with pp's that it's a territorial thing and quite hilarious!

that's hilarious!!

i used to have a chihuahua who would kick so hard after pooping that he would literally launch himself forward three feet.

i have a standard poodle now who does it, but of course since he's a big, leggy guy he looks less macho and more like a ballerina.

Yeah, I get the whole kicking thing - but the growling while doing it was something I had never seen before in any dog I've ever had. It was GREAT, but he hasn't done it again (yet). Darn, I wish I had a camcorder.

My mixed breed dog (mostly Lab, but several other things too) does this as well sometimes. I thought maybe she was trying to bury her poop (like a cat does). But everything you folks are saying makes more sense.

Maybe THIS is why DF feels the need to tell me after he's taken a massive dump! He's an inch shorter than me; he must just be trying to prove his superiority!

Perhaps it's simply a 'male' thing? Every man I've ever dated feels that the world will not start running again after he's taken a dump unless he announces the details!
