I just had to put to kids in cloth last night. I feel compelled to try it again every once in a while. Plus, I have the perfect system -- a trifolded Samuel's soaker in and Angelwrap windpro cover. It's so soft and cushy, breathable, leak-proof, and relatively trim. So I open both diapers this morning with trepidation and voila! Perfect skin and no ammonia smell. But other mornings with the same system, it's super-stinky ammonia and red, almost burned looking skin. What gives? I always use the same washing system. Maybe the kids just pee stronger sometimes? They both drink a fair amount and the diapers are quite wet in the morning, so I think they're well hydrated. I keep meaning to pick up some bleach and try bleaching the SS's and see if that helps. Maybe I'll try it tonight.

Some variables may include how old the diaper is. Are any of the SS newer than others? If some have been included in a strip or something like that recently and others not.... If the diaper was wet in earlier in the night some nights than others....
Some nights Caden doesn't pee until 3 in the morning. Others, he pees much earlier and therefore, the urea has more time to decompose till morning.
Have you considered boiling them first? It's a PITA, but it works for us if I boil for a good 10 min. or more.

I agree with Holly about them possibly peeing earlier in the night and having time for it to smell/cause skin irritation. The times I didn't change ds at night and used hemp there was a horrible ammonia smell in the morning.

The funny thing is that I never had this problem with dd when I used ME OS and a stack of cotton doublers- and I never changed her at night. I think hemp is the problem.

i had the same problem for about two weeks... even after i stripped my diapers... what i didn't realize was this:

when i was stripping my diapers, there were still some next to the changing table that didn't go in that particular wash. so, while i thought i had done all my diapers, a few of them didn't get the treatment. so every now and again, it was HORRIBLE.

good luck with it...
