Hello all...
I see lots of talk on this board and others about buying organic milk. I try to buy all organic with my other foods, but this is the one thing I have trouble with because of the cost. A non-organic gallon costs $2.25 and organic costs $5.50+ ! We go through 2-3 gallons a week sometimes.

I am looking for the reasons why it's worth it to buy organic milk. Actually, my husband is! I'm sold on it, but does anyone have websites, etc. that talk about the dangers of non-organic so that I can show him? Also, what about cheeses and other dairy?

Thank you in advance!

As the mother of a girl, it's especially important to me that the milk she drinks does not come from cows treated with hormones to increase their milk supply. These hormones can wreak havoc with her own hormonal system - it's one reason why I believe we have girls starting their periods younger and younger.

I also want to avoid the avid use of antibiotics in dairy cows. These antibiotics are passed through the milk.

Cows eat grass and it's been shown that children that eat organic fruits, veggies and milk have six to nine times LESS pesticide levels in their bodies.

I get the impression that most organic farms are smaller operations than the giant dairy farms that produce much of the non-organic milk on the market, and I like the idea that I'm supporting smaller, family-owned farms. As a descendant of "family farmers," I'm willing to pay a little extra to help keep those smaller dairy farms in business. I've also noticed that the organic milk we buy here -- Organic Cow, I think, is the brand -- stays "fresh" far, far longer than the non-organic, which starts to smell bad about two days after I open it. We were throwing out so much "bad" non-organic milk that I think we're making up the cost difference just by actually using all the organic milk we buy. Oh, and organic milk tastes 100% better than non-organic, IMHO.

In addition to it not having all the pus and stuff found in regular milk, organic milk tastes better! I never really like milk until we switched to Horizon. Unfortunately ds is allergic to dairy so I haven't had any in months.

Milk is one of those things where the "cheap" grocery store cost of milk produced by factory farming methods is not really so cheap when you consider the external costs. The reasons I buy organic milk despite the higher price are:

1. I don't want to feed milk tainted with rBGH to my little girl (and I don't believe Montsano when they say there is "no difference' in the milk)
2. rBGH makes the cows sick and I'd rather avoid torturing animals to get my food.
3. Sick cows use too many antibiotics and are helping to create resistant bacteria strains. I would rather have antibiotics that work when I need them.
4. We can get organic milk from a local farmer and help support local agriculture.
5. The milk tastes much, much better, and the cream and yogurt are simply divine.
