My Gram just called me and said my Dad was taken via ambulance to the hospital & is having emergancy throat surgery. That's all she knows. What could this be? Anyone have an idea? She said something about "slimy stuff" being in his throat?
I'm extremely worried. :

epiglottitis comes to mind, i read about it in readers digest once. one of those ER emergencies you want to have a good doctor for, cause its very rare. good thoughts for him coming your way.

I don't know about the slimy stuff, but my mom's dad died when she was a teen due to a ruptured esophagus that was not immediately treated. There's a lot more to it, but that's the gist.

I hope everything is ok.

All I know is he's out of surgery. I don't even know how it went - getting all info. second hand from my Gram. I am leaving tonight though to go up & be with him.
Thanks for the insight & well wishes!

Thanks! I am going to be calling myself in a little bit here. I think she's confused because she keeps talking to the nurses but all she can tell me is "I don't know, I don't know..." But, again, it IS her son so she is likely very upset. The only other info. I did glean from her is - apparently he has been unable to eat for the last couple days. I assume it's related. He's not in very good shape. Will be 60 in July & easily looks 90.

*BUMP* Anyone else have any thoughts? Apparently he isn't even awake...that doesn't make any sence to me...but I am getting the feeling this isn't good. :

how scary! i hope you can get more info soon.

if he had surgery on his throat, he's probably on a respirator. they may keep him sedated so that it can breathe for him for a while while his throat heals. that's probably why he isn't awake yet.

your grandmother may be able to have a nurse or doctor talk to you over the phone to explain the situation to you if she is unable to gather the information.

Thanks mosesface. I am in GA & Dad's in NY, it's frusterating & I am HIGHLY aggitated right now. There IS a language barrier with my Gram too. *sigh* The hospital doesn't even really have much info. to give, just that he's done with surgery & is not awake. The nurse I spoke with said that a Dr. would be getting in touch with me...as they understand Gram just isn't getting it.

if you do not hear back from a doctor soon (that can take hours and it's so hard to be patient about things like that), request to speak to the charge nurse or unit director. have your grandmother authorize them speaking to you. they will have more information about what's going on or at least put a fire under the doctor to call you.

Thank you. Yes, I have a feeling I am in for a looooong wait. I am thinking about going up there tonight if I end up hearing it doesn't look good. Really, I just don't think his body is strong enough for surgery.

Not really. They called Gram (NOT me! UGGH, she cannot understand what they are even telling her!) and asked her to come in. Nice, hu? SHE DOESN'T DRIVE. My uncle - an hr. south of her - is driving up to get her and I am flying up immediatly...well, when DH gets here.

Thanks. Just wish I knew why they weren't communicating with ME. She really (and I love her so much) just doesn't understand ANYTHING!
