Okay, I might be overreacting here, but I thought this was really weird. Last night, I went outside to lock up the chicken coop, and my Japanese banty was up high in our pomegranate tree. I tried to coerce her down, but she wouldn't have it. She did come down to a lower branch, but it was just high enough that I couldn't reach her, even on my tip-toes (I'm only 5'3", if that gives you an idea of how high she was). I put out my arm, hoping that she would jump on, but no luck.

When my husband got home around 10, he went out there, and sure enough, she was still in the tree. He took her down and put her in the coop.

I wasn't even sure how she got up there, but my neighbor said that he had seen her on the clothesline earlier in the evening, so she must have gone from the clothesline to the tree. This must be her special hiding place, because there have been a couple of times when I've gone out there and searched for her, and I just cannot find her anywhere. I guess she's been hiding in the tree all of those times!

My main concern is that the tree is right next to the fence between us and our neighbor, and they have dogs (we live in a residential neighborhood). I've never seen the dogs besides through the fence, and they sure do like to bark at me. Anyway, I was really worried last night that she might try to get down on their side, and get attacked by a dog (however, they have chickens, ducks, and geese, so maybe they're used to poultry and wouldn't hurt her).

Also, I'm wondering what she was still doing up there so long after dark. When I went out, it was still dusk, so I hoped that she would come down after I left. I was surprised that she was still out there at ten. Do you think she's protesting because we're taking her eggs (she just started laying on Friday)? Or, is she telling us that she wants an open-air coop?

She probably likes to roost in the tree. A lot of times banties like to fly high up and once it's dark they'll stay there and roost until morning. Oops- I just saw you did get her down and back in the coop!

She will likely keep doing it because she likes the tree!

Yes, I think that she does like the tree very much! She hung out under it for most of the day yesterday!

She either really just likes the tree, or she got scared by something and flew up there and stayed.

Chickens won't move after it gets dark because they can't see at night. That's why she didn't want to come down. We have guinea's and they stay in the trees at night.

Well, that would explain it! When I tried to get her down, it was just about dusk, so there was still some light (it may have been a little before dusk, now that I think about it, because I could see really well, and we don't have any lights in our back yard). She did move around a bit (she flew to a lower branch), but she sure wasn't interested in coming with me.
