I took DD1 on that ride when she was 13 and I could SWEAR they had one of those "you must be this tall...." signs before we got on the ride. Those seats are totally geared for adults. I'm 5'4 and 100 pounds and the seat was big on me. I don't understand either.

Why?
This is all pure speculation but maybe because the family wasn't very familiar with the ride. They didn't know about the 7 passengers who had to be taken to the hospital. The child was tall enough according to the guidelines for the ride so the parent figured it must be okay.

Such a tragic and horrible story. No use in pointing blame at the grieving parents.

it's so sad--I've never been on the ride but if the mother noticed her son's legs and arms were stiff and she thought he was afraid--why was she not trying to comfort him and talk to him--would it have been impossible on that ride??

The seats are seperated from each other and the G's are really intense. It is hard to lift up your hand, not sure if or how you could comfort the person sitting next to you.

Also there is no way to stop the ride from inside the "capsule" if you feel you are haveing physical difficulty with the ride.

What a horrible, horrible story. I'm shocked they already have the ride open again

Just another reason for me to hate Disney.

Well, because they probably didn't really understand the force of the ride. They were probably just looking to have a good time.

i am assuming that they didn't know what to expect and put their trust into the safety practices already established at disney.

i know its frustrating and sad, but why be so judgemental of others?

A fine question. I have been really surprised by the parent-blaming tone in some of the discussions of this terrible, tragic accident. From what I understand, the parents followed the posted rules for a ride in a thoroughly-inspected, reputable theme park. How about some compassion for the parents, who I am sure did not take their child to Disneyland to watch him die?

Until this death I would have had no idea of the danger of that specific ride and would have let DD (48") go on it without thinking. She likes "scary" rides, she's big enough, they wouldn't let her if it wasn't "safe", right?

It would be one thing if they snuck a child with a known heart condition, or who was under the height limit, but this... just a tragedy in my book
