I had very flat nipples when dd was born which made things hell with nursing, especially considering I was busting out of my DD/EE nursing bra. (think trying to latch on to a ballon)She's going to be 5 in Aug and i'm cutting her off then but i'm concerned that my poor nips will flatten again! Anyone know what they normally do?

Hmm, I don't know what to tell you. When I had my first child my nipples were inverted. But my breasts were pointy so that my son was able to latch on and the nipples came out(slight inversion). After he weaned the nipples did not revert but they flattened. WHen dd was born they poked out again , then flattened mostly when she weaned, then with Isaac they popped back out, so I am expecting them to flatten some again when he weans. So while they did flatten, they never inverted again. That may be though because the adhesions were no longer there. I dont know.

It probably just depends. My mom complains that her nipples stayed waaaaay out there, even after weaning her youngest 17 years ago. Her's weren't flat to begin with though. Mine were semi-flat to begin with (I totally understand the balloon thing) and they flatten out between nursing sessions, so who knows?

Mine were flat to begin with. It has only been a few weeks since my little one stopped nursing, and I'm pregnant, but... there's no flattening happening here at present.

I've been wondering this too. Mine are "at attention" all the time and we're only nursing twice a day. My pre-breastfeeding shirts look pretty obscene lately :LOL

I didn't have flat nipples to begin with - just small pink nipples pre-pregnancy.

Now, after nursing 2 kids for 7 years straight (last child nursed till age 5) and almost one year post weaning - they are still very much at attention. In fact, I'm tending to wearing padded bras, just to hide my nipples. That's my personal hang-up - I don't want constantly erect nipples showing through my clothes all the time.

Don't know what that means for someone who had flat nipples to begin with. I realize you probably *want* them to stay somewhat erect, for your next child. Just thinking about it, I would think that even if they flatten out right now, I would bet they will be erect again for the next baby, and I bet you won't have the same struggles again.
