We are delayed/selective vaxers (long story but basically we compromised to this and no circ)

We live outside a very tiny town (pop 500). I was in there yesterday to pick dd #1 up from school, and every one was talking about the gal who owns the cafe and had a new baby grandson that was almost 3 months old. He had passed away from suspected SIDS on Wed night. : Someone mentioned he had just been to the doctor and had his shots the day before. I responded with you realize this is most likely a vaccine reaction, and they were all shocked. A couple outright denied it, but I did get in a lot of education in about 10 min, including that you can go school with out vaccines, and that my 2 youngest have never had any.

I am already known as that crazy mom who co-sleeps, breast feeds for ever and any where, and thinks my kids has an allergy to crappy food, but I think this may be the icing on the cake to cement my craziness.

I just needed to share with others who would be as sad and outraged

My LLL leader pointed out at our last meeting how fortunate we were to live in St. Paul where one doesn't necessarily stand out and we can usually find a kindred spirit. I am definately known as a crunchy granola girl in my neck of the woods. I would definately be the talk of the town if I lived in a smaller community. I just wanted to give you a for having the gumption to follow your heart and to educate others.

From another kindred spirit,
I feel like I'm living under a microscope sometimes. All of our Asian neighbors watching and questioning what we do. And then our small "foreigner" group that thinks we're the "crazy, dangerous, etc." family. And this is a city of 15million. I guess it doesn't matter where you live

I've been the town wacko since I was about 10 years old. Seriously. You'll get used to it. I'm not the only non-vaxer in the area, though, and it's a small town of under 6,000. My friend doesn't vax her kids and there are others at DS' school--the school nurse knew all about the religious exemption and says all of the parents of unvaxed kids have to sign a new one each year. I'm guessing there are several other non-vaxing families around here.

I WISH somebody had told me that vaccines could be dangerous before I had children--if they had, both of my twins would be alive today My poor little boy has to grow up without his twin because of that poison.

You did good!

You most likely planted a seed of doubt in some peoples mind... which might save another baby or two from being vaxed.

There may have been a few that already had their doubts abouting vaxing...and you might have really helped divert disaster for some child.

We are in a small town also. Can't wait until my kids go to school. I'm sure somehow their vax status will become known locally, and I'll be the 'wacko' mom.

I don't think the town per say even knows I exist, but the neighborhood does... dealing with them is annoying enough, being the Family Freak is starting to affect me. And of course, I'M the one responsible for turning their brother/son into a freak as well, because he is apparently incapable of researching anything on his own and coming to his own conclusions!!

Someone else must have been thinking about a possible vaccine-SIDS connection in this case, otherwise, why would they have bothered to bring up the fact that the infant was vaccinated the day before he died?

Just as an update to this. I was talking to the grandma a couple of weeks ago and was asking how the parents were, as we talked she brought up how they think it was a vax reaction, and they will never have any of their kids vax, if they have more!!!! They did not know you could refuse any of them . She (Grandma) also had no idea how many vaxes new babies got now-a-days and was so suprised when she learned.

So maybe a tiny bit of good came out of this - they are spreading the word, although most think it is very unusual, and could not happen to them.

I don't think so, they way it was said to me was, He had just been to the doctor and was very healthy - even got his shots. Like if he had not been healthy, then he would not have gotten them

Sigh. Its not just a small-town thing. I live in one of the most densely-populated counties in the entire United States...and am still the local fringe lunatic:

It's good you said something and I know exactly how you feel. A friend of mine had a baby who died of "SIDS" less than 48 hours after receiving birth dose of Hep B. Her mom doesn't believe it was the vaccine since the doctors deny it.

Every time I hear of a baby dying of SIDS after a vaccination I want to say something but so many people just think we are nuts to even suggest looking into it further.

So funny that I read this today (not funny about the baby but funny about being a crunchy nut). Just today at work, at lunch, these older ladies I work for were talking about vax like "Do you know there are people who don't vax their kids! And whooping cough is coming back!" (I guess she must have seen something on the news that made her think whooping cough would be extinct if everyone vaxed, how niave, that vax is only 33% effective anyway!) Anyway, back to the story, the other lady says, "And poiio!" (WTF, how do you figure polio is coming back, what are you talking about??!!) other lady continues, "How do they go to school?" First lady says "The parents sign a waiver" Second lady's eyes get big as saucers, and tells this story of how her first kid had a reaction to the measels vax so when she was vaxing her second she wouldn't give her DD the MMR. Then the school wouldn't let her kids go to school (many years ago) without it, so she had to give her DD the MMR. Then her daughter got mumps from it!! And they still wonder why someone would want to have an unvaxed child - DUH! Well, anyway, I just bit my tongue HARD because I didn't want to work with people who thought I was a total lunatic. (Besides they are past childbearing age so no point in trying to educate.)

Ha! I'm in Hawaii too, and sometimes I feel that way. Most of the time, actually. We vaccinated my first, but we'll be delaying them with our second.

But yeah, I really miss living in Portland and the SF bay. There are lots of exceptions, but it's shocking how little time some people take to educate themselves in my community.

Glad I'm not the only town wacko!
I swear if I had a dollar for every time someone told me that I'm going to have to home school my child because the school won't let un-vaxed kids in....I'd be a millionaire!
And I work in a school! Do people really think I don't know the rules?
