I remember reading the stories as a child. I have always thought the same thing - CR is going off to school. Even Disney interpreted it that way. If you watch The Search For Christopher Robin, it starts off with that interchange, about not being able to do "nothing" anymore. Then CR leaves a note to Pooh about going off to school, which Pooh misinterprets and they go on a search for him.
