Hi Everyone,

Great news! The Wisconsin breastfeeding bill, AB 104, is scheduled
for a public hearing in the Assembly Health Committee (chair, Rep.
Leah Vukmir) on next Tuesday, March 20th at 11am in 417 North (Gar
Hall) at the Capitol. This is incredible news since last year's bill
never even made it this far.

It is really important to pack the room, so please spread the word.
You should know that one doesn't have to stay for the entire
hearing--they can sign in and register their support, and after the
testimony is heard, the names of all supporters will be read and
tallied. So, even people who can only come for a few minutes can
register their support, though packing the room with lots of moms,
dads and kids will make a huge impression!

If you are interested, you can read a brief statement (5 minutes)
about why this bill is important to you. It is especially important
to change the minds of skeptics who feel this bill is unnecessary or
not needed (some call it a "feel-good" law). So those with stories of
how you have been affected by the lack of breastfeeding rights'
protection in our state, NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD. We
especially need the testimony of health professionals and mothers who
have personal stories of harassment. Many don't believe that
harassment of breastfeeding families exists.

Thank you for helping to support breastfeeding rights in Wisconsin!

Sincerely,

Laurel Franczek

For those planning to come from outside the Madison-area, I've
attached links here for public parking by the Capitol.

I will now be submitting the written testimony many of you have sent
to me to the chairs of the Senate and Assembly Health Committees.

HELP SPREAD THE WORD!

(I got this from the WI breastfeeding yahoo group, just wanting to get the word out to everyone I know!)

Come to Madison for the BF bill hearing!

Hi all

As many of you know, HB 104, the house version of SB 30, The Right to
Breastfeed Act, has been scheduled for a public hearing in the Assembly
Committee on Health and Healthcare Reform on Tuesday, March 20, at 11:00 in
Room 417 North at the Capitol (GAR Hall).

This is the first time the bill has managed to get a hearing, it died in
committee last session due to a perceived lack of public support. So here's
our opportunity to change that! We need to PACK the room with moms, dads,
nursing babies and kids of all ages. So please spread the word to your local
LLL members, playgroups, homeschool groups, CBE's, doulas, LCs and anyone
else who supports the right to nurse in public without fear of harassment.

Remember, too, that you do not have to stay for the entire hearing. The bill
is second on the agenda so it shouldn¹t take much time, but if you¹re short
on time you can still come to the hearing room and sign a slip registering
your support for the bill. After the hearing the names of all those in
support will be read and the numbers counted, so we want to get as many as
possible.

It's also very important that those of you (and your family, friends and
neighbors) who live in the districts of committee members to contact your
representative and ask them to vote yes for HB 104 AS WRITTEN. It's possible
that an amendment may be added that requires mothers to nurse with
discretion and we want committee members to know that we support the bill
as written.

Letters and emails are best, but if all you have time for is a phone call,
that's great, too! Let them know that you're a constituent and briefly
explain to them why you support the bill, which permits mothers to nurse in
any location that they¹re authorized to be.

The primary objections to the bill that have been raised are a) that it's
not necessary and b) that nursing in public is lewd. All members of the
committee need to hear the reasons why this legislation is necessary, so if
you've personally experienced harassment while nursing in public, let them
know. It¹s also important for them to know that fear of being made to feel
embarrassed or asked to leave while nursing in public is one of the factors
that keeps breastfeeding rates low, and all of you know the many health
benefits of breastfeeding for mothers and babies alike. Mention those, too.

If your representative is a Republican member of the committee, be sure to
mention the reasons why nursing is NOT lewd‹the President of the Family
Research Institute, which is an influential lobby on the Republican side,
has referred in the press to nursing in public as lewd and has talked about
the need for discretion requirements. So it's important for us to address
this issue as well.

A list of committee members, their districts and their contact information
is included below. If you¹re not sure who your representative is (many seats
changed hands during the last election) you can find out at:
