I had mine out at 17 so I don't really remember it...

DH is having his out this Friday -- he's put it off for years. They are all impacted. I am wondering what to expect. I remember being pretty sick to my stomach the day mine were out. Urping after oral surgery sucks. In the past year or two he has developed a very sensitive stomach and if he starts getting urpy it seems to really set him off and then he has a hard time getting it resettled and stopping the pattern of urpiness.

Thoughts on what to expect when adults get theirs out and how to help his tummy stay calm? They say if this goes well he should at least be up and around by Monday but ... well.... when it comes to this kind of thing he's not always a tough guy.

Truthfully, I need him not to crash right now. I am at crunch time for a big grad school project and big deadlines at work as well. I want to take good care of him and I want him up and running ASAP. Is that horrible of me to say? (I feel rather guilty)

All ideas much appreciated.

Thanks!

Usually it's the meds that make you barf....is he getting iv or oral sedation?

Ask the dentist if he can eat before hand--a nice (moderate sized meal) of a protein and complex carb--maybe even just a turkey sandwich on whole wheat?-- might really help his body digest whatever meds he gets and actually help prevent nausea.

Has he had this reaction before? With me, I only vomited after being on the pain meds and eating NOTHING for 2 or 3 days.

Good luck!

he cannot eat for 6 hrs prior.
he is getting sedation because he is very afraid of this whole thing.
last time (only time) he had surgery he urped big time! He did tell dr. about this.

I'm wondering if they can give him anti-nausea meds ... ugh.

They can (and should). My personal recomendation is Zofran or Phenergan (either of which they can give with the iv if it's iv sedation...if it's IV, I'd go for phenergan...seems to work better imo). Reglan doesn;t seem to doo much.

Have him "eat" as soon as he can afterwards--even jello, tea, milkshakes, slurpee, whatever he'll get down.

Thanks. I'm not sure they're going to mix anything in his IV so we're hoping they'll call something in that he can take when on the way. Phenergan, Zofran, or Compazine...

Here's hoping tomorrow goes well. I am nervous (DH is probably more nervous but still)...

You may want to ask them to give him a wee bit of versed iv right before the procedure as this is a sedative and will help him forget the procedure.

I had all four impacted and one infected pulled out under local no problems. Of course, I was 24 yo.

Good luck tomorrow!
