So has anyone had a severly impacted wisdom tooth out under just local anesthetic? I have one that needs to come out soo badly- it's growing into the tooth next to it and it is deep down in my gums- hasn't surfaced at all. It hurts constantly and makes me dizzy and all my lymph nodes are swollen; I feel like I have a huge lump in my throat because of it. It makes the back of my neck feel sore all the time and my ears are ringing...the whole bit.

The problem is I can't have general anesthesia and it seems kind of silly to have it anyhow with only one tooth that needs to come out. So...if anyone has had it...is it bad? Does it hurt/can you feel pain/pressure? Does it take very long? I am about to go ahead and see a dentist about it but I am nervous because they always want to sedate you or something but I can't have it....but I really REALLY need this tooth to come out.

Can you have the "gas" stuff...not the real word I know. HAve you talked with the dentist yet? I have found alot of dentist wont remove wisdom teeh that are impacted they will send you to a specialist. How come you cant have the general are you allergic or just dont want it? When I had mine out I did all at once as they said it is easier and they gave me the "gas" and an IV which I wasnt all the way under but like twilight. I would sure ask for pain meds afterwards....but thats me I dislike pain.

i had it under a local and it was still very painful. i almost vomited. you can hear your tooth being pulled and feel it. if there is any way at all i would recomend general. i only had the one done, but they told me that they always put people under just for one tooth uless there is something mediacly prohibiting it. i was pregnant. i am getting chills just thinking about it. oh, and it took like 30 minutes. because it hurt and he kept giving me more meds and haveing to take out the mouth gaurd because i kept gagging.

Gosh...well it looks like I am going to be in pain either way..Thanks for the replies by the way. I can't have general anesthesia because I am pregnant and I didn't know if gas was contradicted in pregnancy? I am about 8 weeks along with my third. Normally, I would wait until the babe was born bofore I got my tooth out but I am just in so much pain and I cannot imagine labor plus that tooth...oouuch.

i think my dh had his wisdom teeth extract with only a local - i didn't know him then so i'm not sure how bad it was. he's a guy though, so i'm sure he was awful afterwards!

i had all 4 extracted at the same time under a general.

I am worried that whomever I go to will either refuse to work with me because I am pregnant or because I can't go under. My mom did get one out that wasn't impacted with local...but my lower one is severly impacted and growing into another tooth.

I had a severely impacted wisdom tooth removed under local when I was about five months pregnant. My tooth was hurting so badly that I couldn't eat, had a horrible headache, and was just totally sick. I didn't realize the dentist was removing the tooth....I thought he had just numbed the area so he could look better. I felt some pressure then saw my tooth dangling from his tools. Ewww!

Yuck! Well, that makes me feel a little better. Thanks Cheyenne. I actually did just talk to a friend who had all hers removed with just local and gas and she said it wasn't bad at all...so I feel a little better now. I guess overall I am just nervous and I don't want to hurt the baby but I also know I can't handle this for any longer-it's starting to interfere with my work.

I have known several people who had impacted wisdom teeth removed with local. None of them have said it was bad. I'm a big chicken and got mine out under general, but if it's really causing you pain, you should just do it with local.

Glad that helped - I know what you mean, though. I am such a baby when it comes to dealing with dentist-inflicted pain. I've needed to have another wisdom tooth removed, but the dentist told me that he'll have to saw it in half and then remove the halves, all under local. I can't make myself go back!

I had three wisdom teeth extracted under local, they were not impacted and all had erupted through the gum. It didnt hurt but the sound of your teeth being pulled out of your jaw is rather unpleasant and throughly disturbing, I cant imagine what it would have been like if the teeth were impacted.

I wonder if a portable radio or cd player with headphones would help mask the sound? Maybe you could plan to take one with you. Put on some of your favorite tunes and try to relax!

i once went to a dentist who regularly offered gas and relaxing tunes (with a headset) for just a regular cleaning! the room they did the fillings in had a picture window overlooking a bubbling brook and a forest - it was lamost like going to a spa! he specialized in dental phobias... and i saw more of the dentist there at a regular cleaning than i have of any dentists since.

I just had my 4 wisdom teeth taken out 3 days ago with just the local. The top two had already come thru but the bottom ones were impacted. The total removal was 10 minutes. My dentist was a removing machine! I felt pressure when they were taking them out, but that was about it. I do wish I had brought my kids mp3 player to drown out the drilling sound though.

To be honest, I dont think the removal is the worst, its the pain after. I'm currently on tylenol 3 with codeine and it only takes the edge off. (but I may be a big suck too)

I'm glad I didnt go under, when it was done, all I really wanted to do was go home and hide in bed. Which I was able to do b/c I only had the local. I cant imagine having to stay there for any amount of time.

Good luck on whatever you decide!

Whew! You brave woman, you! I have to say that when I had mine done with general anesthesia, I was in the office at 8:30 and in the car riding home at 9. It was crazy fast. We went grocery shopping immediately after and I felt 100% normal. Throughout the recovery I didn't need so much as a Tylenol for pain relief. I do realize that I was very lucky and most people don't have as easy a time as I did. Even if they have Ggeneral.
