My uncle breeds wolf hybrids (not wolves to dogs, but hybrids to hybrids) in Texas and one of his packs attacked a hybrid from another pack because she jumped into their enclosure. My uncle said she can't have puppies anymore, but she loves them, and there were puppies in this other enclosure. A neighbor, who is crazy and has been in a feud with my uncle for the past 3 years, taped the fight and took it to the sherriff. The police in their county know this lady well as she calls for all sorts of complaints. There are dozens of police reports showing that everything she's said about my uncle and his animals has been unfounded. Only once was he ticketed and that's because one of his animals was behind on its vaccinations.

The sherriff came out and took another look around the property and questioned my uncle again and again found nothing. So this woman sent the video to PETA and they edited it and put it on their website. Now he's getting angry emails and PETA has vowed to shut him down. There was a protest in Dallas.

If you watch the video (it's at www.peta.com or .org under "Action Alerts" or something like that at the right side of the page) you'll see that it is very disturbing. I can see why people freaked out about it. Especially because of how it's edited. At the end of the video there is a dead and torn up dog shown. That's not one of my uncle's animals. It's a dog that belonged to my grandparents' neighbors. She's made a statement saying that it's her dog. If you notice on the video, the dead dog isn't separated from the person taping by a fence or fences like on the rest of the video. That's because she went across the street, on someone else's property (not my uncle's), and filmed a dead dog to make it look like it was a result of the dog fight. And PETA edited it that way. No one came out to fact check this story before posting the video. The dog who was attacked is alive and well, by the way. She's 11 years old. I don't know who the dog was who got caught up in the fence. That was really disturbing too, I'll admit. But why didn't this lady call my family and tell them this was happening so they could help this animal??? It was more important to her to film it to further the feud, that's why.

I used to belong to PETA (until I learned they want there to eventually be no more pets-that all animals should be "free.") I assumed they fact checked and didn't just take someone's word for it when a complaint is made. Whatever you think about breeding animals or breeding wolf hybrids, this is about a feud between two people and a pack fight.

I don't really know what to think. My grandparents, who also live in the neighborhood, have been harassed by this woman for the past few years. They are in their 80s. I went over and talked to this lady a few months ago and asked her to at least leave my grandparents alone, but she said she's sorry but she'll do whatever it takes to "save the animals." It just so happens that my son and I are going to visit my grandparents this weekend. I have no idea what it's going to be like.

The local news did a story telling my uncle's side of the story yesterday. Here's a link to that:
http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dw...t.286368b.html

What do you guys think?

I think PETA is crazy--not all members, of course, but when you get into their literature there are a lot of bad things. That video is a classic example of the stuff that they do.

I'm not really a supporter of wolf hybrids, but I am sorry that your grandfather is having to go through this. I personally think he should talk to the police and the phone company or his ISP--threats are illegal.

Yep, what Joanna said, I'm also not a fan of wolf hybrids but nor am I a fan of PETA--they arrived a French Ring trial and started letting dogs out of trucks--2 of their guys got bitten and then they tried to sue. One dog also was hit and instantly killed on the road--he'd just taken high in trial the day before.

I've been around my uncle's hybrids for years and the only ones that freak me out are the ones who seem more German Shepherd-like. They are the lower percentage hybrids and are warier around strangers. (German Shepherds make me nervous too for some reason.) These hybrids are the older ones-from back when he bred hybrids to dogs. Now he only breeds hybrids to hybrids and their temperaments are better. For some reason, the higher percentage hybrids are friendlier than the lower percentage ones. : The lower percentage hybrids are "retired" and have their own little pack.

As a parent, I personally wouldn't choose a wolf hybrid for a pet. But it's because I'm paranoid about safety issues with many dogs and kids-and I don't know if wolf hybrids are as predictable as say, labs. I'd rather have a dog that has a somewhat predictable temperament. Our dog is a lab/border collie mix and she's the most tolerant dog ever. And we foster small to medium dogs for a rescue group too.

But I have to say that none of my uncle's animals are underfed or sick. He gets vet care if any do get sick. And he doesn't just let them fight it out. Even from just a financial standpoint, how would it help his business if he let them kill eachother? He would have stopped the fight and gotten the dog who was wrapped in the fence free immediately if his neighbor would've told them this was going on.

If he was the cruel animal abuser/neglecter that his neighbor says he is, I'D report him myself. I can't sit by and let animals suffer. That's why I don't live out in the country. I'd make my neighbors mad by being all in their business. "Are you sure that hog pen is big enough?" "Doesn't that sneezing chicken need to go to the vet?" I'm laughing, but I'm serious too!

I had a wolf and rottweiler mix growing up who was just the most perfect dog ever until he managed to escape the privacy fence and got hit.

I like some of the ideas behind PETA, but I agree. The pet thing is ridiculous. I am sorry that your family is going through this. I would have your uncle contact the police to show them the website and so they can be on the lookout for anyone who wants to come make trouble with them. Can he sue her? I am no lawyer, but is that libel?

ETA: Yet another problem that I have with peta. The "running with the nudes" what is that? WHy do they have to sell sex in worse ways than the corporations I hate the most? Why does sex have to sell compassion for animals. Sorry, that's OT.

Yes, he is taking her to court. She's been threatening to take him to court for a while now, but the law keeps not finding anything wrong when they come out. I guess she's realized that that's not going to work, so PETA was the next step. She's also called the news stations and given the video to them. Dallas Morning News (the main newspaper) was out at my grandparents' house today. My grandma said she went to the doctor yesterday and her blood pressure was 180/90. And she's already on blood pressure medication. My grandparents are nervous because my uncle's been getting death threats over email from PETA people. They are saying things like, "You should be skinned and throw in with your wolves," and "You should be decapitated." Crazies! I read somewhere where someone called the group "domestic terrorists." I guess I had never seen the ugly side before. I admit that I go to their website to look for companies that don't test on animals. Are there any other websites that maintain updated lists of companies that do and don't test on animals?

BTW, the protest in Dallas I mentioned earlier was actually their regularly scheduled rally and not a protest against my uncle. I talked to him today.

Hopefully our visit will cheer everyone up a little and take their minds off things.

About the naked thing: Yeah! Naked people and animals just don't go together. Or they shouldn't... :puke

I think this is an example of why I have completely lost respect for PETA. They do this kind of stuff all the time. They have been known to out and out lie to get their way and they have no shame because if it leads to an animal being set free then it is fine. They are no better than hooligans in my opinion. They have compared animal ownership to slavery, they use shock tactics to scare children and then deny they use shock tactics with children, and they lie all the time about medical facts that, in fact, are not fact at all. They also use sexuality to sell their ads and then deny that their "I'd rather go naken" ads are designed to be titillating to get attention. The worst one, and this got a lot of mamas here at MDC, was when they advocated for boycotting the March of Dimes because they supposedly supported animal research when in fact the animal research they were citing was completely out of date and not at all related to the March of Dimes. They were lying! Sadly for them, since they have no credibility in the scientific arena, researchers and government workers don't listen to anything PETA has to say. What started out as a good idea, to advocate for animals, turned into a sham.

Ugh I am sorry this is happening to your uncle. I lost all respect for PETA and the HSUS a long time ago. Something similar happened to my AST's breeder last year. On her website she had a page that showed how to glue natural ears so they set right, as an alternative to cropping ears. For whatever reason PETA put out some kind of action alert against her for this and she got tons of hate mail and people were sending her harassing IM's. I thought is was very odd becuase here she was offering an alternative for surgical cropping, that PETA gets so up at arms about, and they still find reason to harass her... She took the page down for a few months until it blew over.
