So, my DW could produce her own sperm and I could carry the child, thereby creating a child that is biologically ours....? Cool. but probably not in this lifetime. But man, with her looks and my personality, that child would be destined for greatness! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/winky.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Wink"><br><br><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/dizzy.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Dizzy">:<br><br>

Commenced. It does not make me sad. In fact, it makes me overjoyed at the possibility that my wife and I may one day be able to create a child that is a representation of us and our relationship. It is not man-bashing or anything like that, but I think this is one of the furthest things from sad. Really, what could be sad about us creating a biological child? Do you really think that women would quit having sex with men and procreating that way?

To me this is on the par with cloning which I am personally against. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/duck.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Duck">: <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/duck.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Duck">:<br><br>
I can see how this can be abused.

To be honest I am not so sure its such a great thing. I need to think more, clearly, as to why I think that... Perhaps because of the unknown consequences. Like with GM foods - the reason why I don't like it is because its not clear how GM will affect our world. Same with woman made sperm. I am just not sure how the dynamics of the society will change.<br><br>
I can clearly see how its a great thing for some families, but not sure yet if it will affect our world in a positive way.

Quote from the article:<br><br>
"Creating sperm from women would mean they would only be able to produce daughters because the Y chromosome of male sperm would still be needed to produce sons. The latest research brings the prospect of female-only conception a step closer."<br><br><br>
I find this extremely worrying. I also think that for this reason this treatment would never be available legally to lesbian couples.

I agree. It is way past that "Playing God" thing to me. And I'm not "religious".

I have no problem whatsoever with families composed of two mamas... in fact, my friends Candice and Tara are doing a bang up job raising their children.<br><br>
However, I agree with what BelgianSheepDog said. I think we play it WAAAY too fast and loose with reproductive technology in general. I'm not really on board with the rent-a-uterus phenomenon. I also think better use could be made of our medical research dollars. I find this type of thing to be frivolous. It's like the researchers who are trying to impregnate men... um, are there not enough female wombs in the world? Is there not enough male sperm?<br><br>
Also, I don't think that genetic relation makes a family, so I don't really understand why that is so important to some people. That's just my bias.

All that's needed to raise a child is love and some common sense. Penis, vagina, none of the above? Who cares?<br><br>
The genetic engineering of this whole thing though, while cool on the scientific scale, is seriously creepy and wrong.

ITA. I think we should just do the old fashioned thing and use the sperm bank. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"><br><br>
I don't think it's necessary for the child to be comprised of both partners' genetic material to be their child. I think that notion is a perhaps a bit of internalized heterosexism?

I removed the sexual side discussion from this thread.<br><br>
This seems to be a very interesting subject and a sincere discussion might be more appropriate than a derailment on sex toys.

Aw, I'm sorry I missed the sextoys tangent. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"><br><br>
And something tells me that men are nosy and persistent enough in general to be totally un-phase-outable, no matter who's making the spermies. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/winky.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Wink"><br><br>
In fact, the less you actually <i>need</i> a man, the more they seem to hang around. Like cats. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/orngtongue.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Stick Out Tongue">

WOOT! well I'm excited. There is no concern about the possible phasing out of opposite sex parents raising kids after all they are the majority. But WOOT for everyone else!
