I know it's completely normal to think about this possibility, but I can't convince myself I'm not having twins. I felt movement very early (just prior to 12 weeks) and have gained more weight more quickly than I "should" have. I also have a "psychic" friend who swears I'm having twin boys...she didn't know I already suspected there might be two when she told us this either.

I am measuring a little large...about 2 weeks ahead. It's possible that my dates aren't exact as I was having wacky cycles due to breastfeeding my toddler. I have an appt Monday, but I'm thinking we may try to move it to the end of the week and see if I can schedule the u/s for the same day since I drive 3 hours to my birth center. I'll be 18 weeks Monday...she wanted to do the u/s around 20 weeks...do you think that's close enough?

Some days I'm absolutely convinced there's two in there, others I'm not so sure. It's an exciting, and daunting, possibility. Especially since it will unfortuneately drastically change my birth plans.

And today my dh says he's not sure about the u/s. We were watching "In the Womb" and it said that the u/s creates a really loud noise in the womb and dh is afraid it will hurt and/or disturb the baby.

I have twin feelings a lot too. But no u/s scheduled, so I just need to keep wondering until we know for sure. No history, so I doubt there is more than one. But every now and then there is this nagging little voice....

Good luck if you decide to get the u/s. I would think 18w is late enough. Most people get their big u/s done between 18-22w.

Wow- what a thought! Yes, very exciting but daunting! I think 18 w is fine- I was supposed to schedule mine between 18-20 weeks.

I am just curious- for those who don't get u/s- when and how can you tell definitively when there are twins in there? Can they tell if there are 2 separate heartbeats, or can the mw feel two bodies so early on?

I'm 19 weeks pregnant with twins. I had an ultrasound at almost 10 weeks and that is when the nurse saw two. The only difference between this pregnancy and my previous pregnancys is that I started showing a little early. I look like I'm about six months pregnant instead of almost five. They rarely move at the same time, sometimes I feel movement on the left side and sometimes on the right side. My doctor uses two dopplers at the same time to hear the seperate heartbeats.

Something about thinking about two dopplers and two heartbeats echoing through the room just makes me smile!

I decided to go ahead and schedule an u/s. I called my midwife this morning and she doesn't want to do it until closer to 20 weeks so we can tell the sex (I really would like to know). So we are going to delay our monthly check a couple of weeks so we can do both at the same time. She's supposed to call me back with a date and time, but I haven't heard from her yet. Which means I'm missing my nap sitting around waiting for the phone call. :yawning:

I actually had a friend (an l/d nurse) sneak me in for an u/s at her hospital a few weeks ago b/c I was getting so big and feeling movement so early. We only saw one, but she's not a trained tech, it was a tiny portable machine with low resolution, and there was a point we thought we saw two. I thought seeing just the one heartbeat would be enough to convince me, but it's not. I'm stubborn in my whims, I guess.
