Total single mama I-CAN-DO-IT moment today! I realized today that I had more vacation than I had plans and was wishing I had something fun to do with DS other than just take a few days off and stay home or go see my parents. I thought about camping, but really wasn't jumping up and down with excitement.
Thought I might mooch along with my parents for a few days on a little trip they're taking this summer. But I started looking into cabin rentals (thinking about next year). And I found a total steal! So DS and I are booked for a week in the woods. It's not on the lake, so it's a lot cheaper, and it's also not a real for-profit thing. Just a family subsidizing their cabin by renting it out a bit. I don't have a boat, so lake isn't necessary...and there's a little river right next to the cabin to keep DS busy.

So we're doing a vacation in the woods for a week later this summer! Hooray!!

It's the kind of vacation that would probably annoy STBX because I have no intention of DOING anything but let DS explore and maybe drive over to the big beach a few times. Actually, we'd have never attempted it together because we were always recovering from him losing a job or going on weekend trips for his hobby.

I'm so looking forward to this!!! No cell phone. It's between classes, so zero responsibility. Just hanging in the woods soaking up trees. Teach DS how to roast marshmallows and let him collect as many sticks as he can carry. :-D

That is fabulous. A real vacation, really relaxing, really quality time together - wonderful!

I did a similar thing a couple of summers ago - rented a cheapie place and did nothing whatsoever for an entire week but swim, ride bikes and shoot basketball hoops with my son. And we loved it! I hope to do something like that again, the best week ever. Have a great time!

I mentioned it to STBX when he dropped of DS. He seemed baffled by the idea of going by myself. He figured I was going with someone. He doesn't realize that the most relaxing times in my life have been entirely alone in the woods. (We've only been married for 9 years!!!) I don't need activities. And I'm thoroughly looking forward to it!

I would really like to do something like this every summer. I always thought it was out of my budget, and really, the lake resorts with lots of people doesn't appeal enough to make me want to save up all year!! This is more like borrowing someone's personal cabin in the woods. It's about 25% the cost of the commercial places...and there's no neighbors to pretend don't exist! Gotta love craigslist!!!

Good for you - what a nice week to look forward to!!!

I have been trying to find a way to do something similar this summer - I actually asked H about it a couple of months ago - I need time away - from him and lots of other family stresses. I was going to look for somewhere super cheap close enough to H's office where he could still see kids some -(was hoping to find somewhere for several weeks - doubtful we could afford.)
H. will likely be supportive if it is not about me needing to be away from him!

Anyway, thanks for the craigslist reminder. Anyoone else have any resources for finding a super cheap place to get away?

Have a wonderful break - let us know how many sticks get collected!

Ooh...several weeks would be heaven. But even I might want to see other human beings by then. When DS gets a little older, it might be better to go somewhere with people. But I figure that while he's little, we can just hang out and explore on our own. Even the kitties get to come!

I saw LOTS on craigslist...and there were people posting requests too. Location and sometimes their budget. I don't know if they'd get takers or not. But it seems like this is the time of year when people remember to list their cabins. The expensive resorts fill up quickly. But there are still lots of openings from private individuals. I didn't expect them to be so affordable! I just got lucky and found one that was very small and not directly on the beach (but it has the river, so it's good for our purposes). Plus it's further away from the metro. Not convenient for a weekend trip, but fine for a full week.

Maybe just start asking around a bit. You never know who might be interested in renting out their cabin for a while!
