i've read that you need to treat your wood cutting boards with special mineral oil every once in awhile to keep the wood moisturized and prevent cracking, etc. i know you can't use most veg. oils and such because they're susceptible to rancidity, but what about coconut or palm oil? i really don't like the idea of slathering mineral oil on my cutting board...

I have two that I've never treated with anything. My mom has one or two that she's had for probably 20 years, and never treated them. I don't wash them in the dishwasher, maybe that's why? I would think that a light coating of olive oil would be fine, as long as you do wash it at least *occasionally*, lol.

Nobody in my family (me, mom or grandma) ever put anything on our cutting boards. I've had the same one for about 14 years that I use all the time, my mom has had several for many years longer than that - and is probably using some of my grandma's too!!
