Hi! DH says he will buy me a Wood stove for Christmas. We'd both really love it. We have a stone fireplace, but it is like a stone facade around a firebox, if you kwim? They once burned wood in it with no insert, I know that . . . Now there are gas logs, which we will take out . . .

I would like to be able to cook in/on it in a real pinch (like a blackout) . . . Can you ever do that with an insert? Is an insert really your best option with a fireplace?

I wish I had an answer for you. I am awaiting my wood stove install right now (coming tom.) I dont know if you can cook w/ an insert. That's one of the reasons we are getting the free standing (set on the hearth of our existing FP) I know you can cook in a traditional fp.

http://www.williamrubel.com/hearthco...replace-crane/

We are awaiting the Ivory enamel coated Jotul firelight 600 wood burner. I am so excited!

Hey where are you at mama? I'm close to Western NC! (Lincoln county)

DH is leaning toward the freestanding too, b/c the insert still requires electric.

Have you seen this thread?
http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=734005

In my post I recommended a site called "Hearthnet". Also, there is a new site, "Hearthtalk".
http://hearthtalk.com/

You should be able to get good advice at either site if you post the details about your house and heating needs.

It looks like Hearthtalk will also have an environmental emphasis.
I am getting a dutch oven w/ legs for xmas. I am hoping to be able to bake w/ it. I am sure it will be trial and error. Anyone know any good sites that help?
I have read that using a trivet or wok base can help when you dont want direct heat. Still learning

Is a Resolute just a regular wood stove?
