I think it depends on the quality of the toy. A cheap toy may splinter, yes. But our little one has several wooden HABA toys and they are made of a smooth and sturdy wood. He could chew on them all day and I think they'd be fine.

He also has a little wooden shape sorter wagon made by another German company and it's just as sturdy. The wood of the wagon and the blocks are smooth and have made it to him from his two siblings. As long as you choose high quality you'll be good
