...if the mother of a 6 yr old who goes to daycare (and has for 3-4 yrs) and will start first grade in the fall said: "We haven't really taught him to wash his hands after he goes to the bathroom yet." My aunt said this to excuse her son not washing his hands (he actually doesn't wash them for any reason, and washed them 2 times over the course of a week--at my mother's insistance--and he doesn't even take a bath everyday so they don't even get clean that way either) and my mother and I were surprised. And concerned as well, this child gets sick all the time and we had always assumed it was just because he is so very skinny and barely eats but we are worried his hygene could be another factor in why he's always getting sick.

Ditto, plus...

I don't have kids yet, but it seems to be something that is taught hand-in-hand (so to speak...
) with potty training...

I know that's definitely what SIL did with DN#1... She's 6 1/2 and has been washing her hands (as well as a she could) at least since she was 3...

That is weird. The day care my kids went to taught hand washing with potty training. They actually had the kids washing their hands several times a day. They even got Scrubby Bear certificates in hand washing.

We wash our hands a lot in our house! People like that are one of the reasons we wash as often as we do! Hands touch EVERYTHING. I cannot believe that their daycare did't enforce handwashing. My son's place was all about handwashing. Before meals, after meals, every potty trip, when they came in from being outside. If a child had a cold, they had to after they blew their nose. Eww Ewww Eww
