In this region, it is illegal to fire a gun within a certain distance of the road.
I witnessed someone shooting a known varmint from the side of the road.

I'm torn - on one hand I could take a photo and report this person, but on the other hand, I am more than happy to see the critter's population thinned out.
And since this creature lived so close to the road, it's essentially "immune", unless someone chose to break the rules.

Which will cause you more internal anguish, knowing you didn't report or knowing future roadside-dwelling pests will be even safer?

I wouldn't call unless the shooter was being very dangerous (shooting with heavy traffic, kids etc around). It's your call (you knew that) but the WAY in which the person did this would be most relevant to me. If it's someone who is sick of the vermin and opted to break the law under carefully considered conditions in order to rid the neighbourhood of it, that's one thing. If it's a reckless idiot who wants to shoot where they want to shoot and doesn't care who might get hurt or what laws are broken that's something else.

Also, check your laws. It might have not been illegal if he had the right permit/license. I would be more incline to thank him but ask him about safety....especially with little ones. Maybe some forewarning.

A situation like the OP is not uncommon where I live. I agree with GoBec's evaluation suggestion.

I would report it only if I thought someone was being actually unsafe.

I'd report it in a heartbeat.

I'd be far more concerned about somebody shooting guns near a road than I would be about potential dangers of an animal.

I doubt they will do anything anyway, while discharging a gun in the city limits is generally illegal in most places exceptions are usually written into the law for cases such as this.

That, I don't consider vermin elimination a valid reason to break gun laws.

No, I am far more worried about vermin and dangerous animals than guns.

No kidding, a racoon killed my neighbors dog. You can bet if it had been my dog and I had witnessed it I'd have gotten my gun.

I think the laws about shooting animals from the road are based on it being "easy pickings" (and resulting in too many animals being killed) and not so much about safety. But then that's for hunting, which isn't permitted anywhere near the city around here...

In any case, I would be ok with it if it wasn't unsafe. I'm not a fan of guns but I'm generally opposed to meddling with other people's business.

And if somebody wanted to shoot the pigeons or rats or skunks that I've had to deal with, I would be thrilled. Unfortunately there's no safe way to do that where I live. I don't think you can fire a gun (legally) within an hour's drive from my house.

p.s. I love the word varmint.

Well it depends on the animal, each state has their own listings as what consistutes a nuisance animal and what is game with a hunting or trapping season. Generally if it's on your property and menacing you or your animals or crops hunting laws to not apply and it's open season.

Actually, I would be more worried about the guns than bears and mountain lions. And yes, I live in BC, both of those have been spotted with in city limits and they only attack if they are sick, too weak to find other food, or feel they or their young are threatened.

There are exceptions when it comes to your own livestock/property i.e. we can shoot a raccoon at night or a coyote on a Sunday, whereas a regular hunter cannot fire a gun on a Sunday, or between certain hours of dusk and dawn etc.
But the minimum distance from a road does not change, and you are not allowed to fire a weapon from a vehicle etc.

So I know for a fact that he was out of line by not being the minimum distance from the roadway when he fired his gun.
But he does conduct himself in a safe manner otherwise and was clearly conscientious about how he handled his firearm etc.
I have a hard time ignoring the rules.
Although maybe I'm just jealous that he had the guts to get that one whereas I only stare longingly at it whenever I drive by and curse the fact that it's so close to the road

I would report anyone shooting by a road.

We have a anal neighbor that will literally shoot a gun off in the air if we make a noise past 10 pm.. I call the cops on him everytime.

I wouldn't call on your guy if I didn't think people were in danger, but shooting a gun off near a road pretty much makes it a danger.

LOL

My neighors house, where the racoon killed his Jack Russell is very very close to the road no way I begrudge him shooting his gun responsibly under these types of conditions.

I'd ignore it... its illegal to fire a gun *from* a car, but I never heard of it being illegal to shoot a gun x feet from a road too... seems pretty silly to me.
