I didn't put this in the schooling section because it isn't about learning.<br><br>
My daughter will start school in August. We live about a half mile from the school, if that much. I grew up walking to school - not alone, but I walked for several years and there's no reason she can't do it, too. Problem is, there is no sidewalk between here and there. There is a "path" on the side of the road that doesn't quite reach our driveway and doesn't extend all the way to the school but no hard sidewalk. Also, the bus will pick her up at the end of the driveway but I'm not putting her on it even if it is only a half mile. I HATE the thought of driving my car there and fighting my way out of a sea of other cars and while the speed limit is fairly slow (50 km/hr which I think is about 30 or 35 mph) there are large trucks that drive it. I plan on petitioning the city to build a sidewalk there. My husband thinks I should just drive. I CAN just walk the path that's there. What would MDC do?

I would just use the path. As long as you're walking with her, it should be ok. You can always put in a request that they put in a sidewalk, but even if they do comply, it will take a while, and during that time, how would you get her to school?

I'd request a sidewalk. If it's been raining you're not going to want to walk in the mud, of if it snows you will have a hard time plowing the 'path'<br><br>
It can't hurt to ask, the worst that can happen is they'll tell you no.

Of course! She'll only be 5! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"><br><br>
Jamesmama, that's a good point. We do get a lot of snow. I expect to drive her if it's snowing hard and I know the city plows the sidewalk in front of the grocery store but the path will likely get covered in the winter.

I voted to petition for a sidewalk. Walking the path doesn't sound too bad but longer term a sidewalk would be nice.<br><br>
Do you mind if I ask why you won't consider the bus?

You have a car, a bus will pick her up at the end of your driveway or there is this 1/2 mile unpaved path route you could use. It sounds like you have several options to get your dd to school.<br>
I would not petition for a sidewalk if I were in your situation... unless there were a large number of children also walking on the path -or- I did not have any options but to use that path.

If the sidewalk would go through other people's yards, it will be really hard to get it put in. Where I live anyway, that is something that has to go up for vote by the landowners it would affect, and then they have to pay for it themselves. Since most people oppose anything that costs them money, it can take years to get the project approved. I wouldn't count on being able to get a sidewalk put it any time soon.<br><br>
While I would love to have a sidewalk in our neighborhood, I am actually dreading the day it happens because we have a corner lot and, if they did it today, it would cost us $5,600. The longer it gets put off, the more expensive it will be. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="/img/vbsmilies/smilies/gloomy.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Gloomy">:

I vote petition for a sidewalk, but in the meantime walk the path. I would not put a five year old on a bus, either. Their bodies are too small for the 'compartment' method of restraint used in buses.

Here you pay for the sidewalk in front of your house. If you have a corner lot that equals twice as much sidewalk.<br><br><br>

Around here, improvements like that are paid by "specials" which are fees that get added to your property taxes - not everyone's, just the people who live in the affected houses. If you're lucky and live on a major street, like we do, they consider all the nearby residential streets to be affected by the improvements too, so the specials are divided among many people. But people on regular residential streets might have to pay thousands for theirs.<br><br>
A friend of mine and his wife were told by the city that either the city would fix their sidewalk, or they could pay to have it done themselves. It was cheaper to get a contractor to do it, so they paid $900 to have it fixed.

Well, you could homeschool her and not worry about getting her to school at all. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/wink1.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="wink1"><br><br>
Why not walk her there in nice weather and put her on the bus or drive her when the weather's yucky?

Because the city puts the burden on the homeowner. If you didn't pay for it as in individual homeowner they would just raise everyone's property taxes. You will end up paying for it one way or the other. Hrmph.
