Took Gabrielle to see the Neurologist today for her 6 month checkup. Looks like not only is she getting a KAFO to replace the AFO on her left foot, but now she is getting an AFO for her right foot. Sigh....She needs it, I do realize that. But our stupid insurance only covers 1 Orthotic a year. This will be a total of 3 in one year.

So hubby needs to call the insurance company fist thing Monday morning and raise hell. At least the PT said she would write a letter for the KAFO. Hmmm she doesn't even know about the additional AFO for the other foot. Oh welll...

Anyone else meet their IRS deduction for the year yet? We are pretty darn close.

It's sad but true, isn't it? When I talk to a mom with a newly diagnosed kiddo, one thing I always talk to her about is saving receipts, what you can deduct, etc. etc.. Sigh. You know, collectively, we sn mamas could rake in a killing as sn tax advisers, advocates, and legal advisers. Maybe we ought to start a firm....hmm.....*rubs hands together greedily*

Anne, we have met it every year since Charlotte was born. Make sure you are including everything you possibly can. Include your out-of-pocket insurance costs - meaning what comes out of the paycheck to actually have medical insurance. That is a big chunk of change for us. Also include mileage for travel to any and all appointments (including doctors, therapy, anything you can possibly justify) and parking (need receipts for the parking). I have upped our pre-tax health account this year so we are getting more money back along the way so I'm not sure we'll qualify this year. We'll see. I so wish I couldn't get the deduction, but you better believe I add everything to the list that I possibly can.

We've spent $5k out-of-pocket thus far but need almost $8k to hit that 7.5% and I'm not sure we're going to make it. I need to go back and figure out mileage - that should add a little chunk since we live in the boonies and therapy is like a 30 mile trip 1-way.

We bought the Quicken Medical Manager. Is an awesome program. It also keeps track of mileage to and from appointments.

No, we haven't forgotten insurance premiums. I need to verify with hubby how much that is per month.

This is it. Its $49.99 but worth it. Especially when you have a ton of medical bills and Providers to keep track of. Keeps track of mileage to and from appointments too. Also has appeal letters to your insurance company.

http://quicken.intuit.com/healthcare...software.jhtml

Thanks, Ann. Of course this would mean I have to give up my pile of 3 ring binders. I don't know if I would know how to function.

IME insurance pays for one orthotic per body part, so the second AFO shouldn't be an issue and since the original AFO is being replaced with a KAFO that should be covered as well.
