While I'm planning a homebirth, I went in for a higher-level ultrasound with a high-risk perinatologist due to my daughter's previous heart conditions at birth. And yeah, I totally wanted to know whether it was a boy or girl because I am the box-shaker at Christmas.

Good news all around - baby looks good, no heart problems or other big problems, he gave some great advice on avoiding preeclampsia 2nd time around, and it's a boy!

We thought it would be a boy from the start, so we weren't too surprised - and we were totally happy. We only want two children, so this feels right.

Yeah - the really really cool things about this perinatologist was that he was going on and on about how midwives' patients tend to be soooo healthy, aware of their bodies, are very self-educated, take good care of themselves, have great protein-rich diets, and have bigger, healthier babies. I think I said something like, "well, I don't know how big I want a baby to be..." and he said something along the lines of "but if you have a big baby, you want a midwife, because they really do a great job of getting them out with so little work. They are the experts."
He also cooed over the baby on the ultrasound, "they are just so cute, so beautiful" - which is a new thing for me to hear from a male doctor, ever.

I guess if anything does go wrong again (cross fingers no no no) I'll be calling on him. I like anyone who seems to truly respect midwives and women who take care of themselves, enough to go on about it. This was a MUCH more pleasant, quick, and non-stressful ultrasound than any I had in my last pregnancy, with technicians & radiologists. This will be the only one!

Now I'm gonna go search threads/read books about raising boys, I always hear "they're so different" but not really sure what that means...and readying my responses to the no-circ thing (we'll be the first in our families NOT to do so). How fun!

You know, most of the people I know IRL and here seem to be having opposite sex babies of the kids they already have. That's pretty cool! (if thats what you want, of course)

Congrats on the great U/S news!

Congrats on the good news! What did the doctor say about avoiding Pre-Eclampsia? I had it last time too and I am hoping to avoid it this time around.

I must say I am sooo jealous of you mamas who are finding out the baby's sex. I am tempted, but I can wait.

Chasmyn - It was at Overlake Maternal/Fetal medicine, although we don't live there, it came recommended as being very midwife-friendly. He was great. You can PM me if you want his name directly...

AmyGirl28 - He said: monitor weight closely; baby aspirin at night; increased folic acid intake (up to 1200 mcg I think?) - he quoted some study that I hadn't heard of but will research; making sure of adequate protein supply (although not the really high amounts of brewer diet).

Yay! I'm with Ashe- boys are awesome, because they don't get so much pressure to get their spirits squashed. I haven't found a book on raising boys that didn't wind me up yet, though- the best I've found was A.S.Neill's stuff about how he started Summerhill (but he is almost obsessive about masturbation- a product of his time, I guess...)

I thought so. We went to Overlake too and I fell in love with that man. He ROCKED. He was as happy as we were to be telling us that we were having a healthy baby boy - after our first son's heart defects we were so freaked out. And it was amazing - I've never see a doctor become so invilved in his patients so quickly and so thoroughly. And he LOVES the midwives (and they love him!). He is awesome.

Congrats on your baby boy!!!

And how awesome to hear about another pro-midwife perinatologist! We had to choose a new midwife for this pg (my former midwife moved) and it was very reassuring to hear my new midwife and peri speak so highly of each other.
